What you need to do is start here with the basic's don't assume anything.
So fine out what works and what dose not work .
Look for clogs air restrictions and most importantly vacuum leaks in vacuum reservoir's and hose connections .
You will likely find a problem that if corrected will fix it all

The a.i.r. Pump that injects air into your exhaust , that is driven by the accessorie belt does not push enough so there is a secondary electric a.i.r pump that pushes the extra air needed to burn off the emissions in the catalytic converter if the secondary pump is not working properly it will not pass because the convertors are not getting the extra air needed to do there job.

SOURCE: No AIR pump

Your vehicle came with a smog pump. It may have seized up (probably breaking the fan belt) and my have simply been removed by a mechanic at an earlier time. It is located below the alternator on your vehicle.
If there is no pump but a bracket to hold it, it has definitely been removed. Vehicles will often pass a state smog test without the pump. It only works during engine decelleration (when you lift your foot off of the gas pedal)

SOURCE: 97 CAVALIER (Z24) FAILED SMOG TEST

No, the water pump leak would not cause it to fail the smog test. The only way that could have any bearing on the test results, would be if you lost a lot of coolant, and the car was overheating, then maybe it would have something to do with failing. What were the results (specific #;s and exactly what failed?) Is the check engine light on?

Whats the driving cycle for secondary air system

Hi,

Please take the car for a 60-point inspection at your local dealer and this should tell you everything that needs to be changed in order to pass your smog test.

Also, fumes could be leaking internally, so I would suggest getting a voc dectector to monitor the air quality within your car. If you can't fix the car, get a new one...if for nothing else to protect your life/health. Thank you.

My 2000 Chevy Malibu won't pass smog because my secondary air systems not ready , any clue?

Yes . GM has had problems with Secondary Air Injection System ! Should have stored DTC - diagnostic trouble code . There is a electric fan motor that pumps air into the exhaust when cold . These systems get water into it causing problems ,an the diverter valve can develop problems as well . I will send a link for a video on testing the system ! Here is a description of the system .
The Secondary Air Injection System (AIR) aids in the reduction of hydrocarbon emissions. During open-loop fuel control, air is injected into the exhaust stream for a specified amount of time. Heat generated from post-combustion oxidation helps the catalytic converter reach operating temperature sooner (referred to as converter lamp off). The following conditions determine pump operation:
?€¢
Start up ECT and IAT must be more than 4.4°C (39.92°F) but less than 30\°C (86°F).

?€¢
Start up BARO must be more than 75 kPa.

?€¢
The start up conditions will operate for 70 seconds or till the vehicle reaches Closed Loop.

Why doesn't it pass smog (test) because secondary air system is not ready?

Hello Vason,

Is your engine light on?

If so, you need to plug in a diagnostic OBD II reader. Acquire the codes and follow their designation to determine the probable fault source.

And yes if any monitored system, for any reason, does not complete its start up cycle your vehicles ECC will not provide the green light all is well return to the diagnostic tester.

2001 chevrolet tahoe secondary air system not working cant pass smog all I did was replace battery before getting it smog

Disconnecting the battery resets the PCM - engine computer ,an the emission monitors . A drive cycle has to be done to get the monitors to run an hopefully set. That's all you need to do is drive it for few days of different driving conditions - city , highway ,from cold start . google GM drive cycle . OBD Monitor Not Ready

I have a 2002 BMW 745 I with 64000 miles on it. It passes emission smog test but gets 2 engine fail signals indicating a carbon buildup in the exhaust system. I have also had many intermitent erroneous...

I can only assume that your faults are for the secondary air system since they are common. The secondary air system comprises of an air pump, plastic lines, diverter valves, ports inside the heads and monitor by the o2 sensors. I recommend having the air pump tested for proper activation, a smoke test of the lines and diverter valves, and a scan to make sure no oxygen sensor faults are current. Clogged ports in the heads are possible, but I recommend checking the basics first.

P2258 Secondary Air Injection System Control A Circuit High

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...f/OBDSM505.pdf

Secondary air systems typically utilize an electric air pump as well as one or two electrically controlled check valves to deliver air into the exhaust manifold.

The only vehicle which uses secondary air is the 2.3L PZEV Focus. The Focus uses a system with ported air. This means that airflow is delivered to each individual exhaust port. The secondary air pump is energized soon after start-up while the fuel system is in open loop and icing conditions are not likely. After the O2 sensors warm up, the secondary air pump continues to be energized while the fuel system goes into closed loop fuel. The secondary air system continues to run in closed loop fuel until the air pump is de-energized. The typical time period in which the AIR pump is energized is approximately 12 seconds.

The AIR pump flow check monitors the HO2S signal at idle to determine if secondary air is being delivered into the exhaust system. The air/fuel ratio is commanded open-loop rich, the AIR pump is turned on and the time required for the HO2S signal to go lean is monitored. If the HO2S signal does not go lean within the allowable time limit, a low/no flow malfunction is indicated. (P0411)

The electric air pump draws high current and must be energized through a separate relay. Both the primary and secondary circuits are checked for opens and shorts. First, the output driver within the PCM (primary circuit) is checked for circuit continuity (P0412). This circuit energizes the relay and the vacuum-operated check and control valve(s). Next, a feedback circuit from the secondary side of the relay to the PCM is used to check secondary circuit continuity (P2257, P2258).

I have a 4.0 Range Rover 2000. didn't pass California smog test. Code P1412 and P1415. How to fix?

P1412 = Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction (Bank 1)
This is from the EOBD section of the manual.
From the SAI section:
If the vacuum operated SAI control valves malfunction, the following fault codes may be stored in
the ECM diagnostic memory, which can be retrieved using ’Testbook’:
P1412 is one of these, particulary described as : SAI system fault (LH side) - air delivery not reaching catalysts.
(DS note. The Left Hand side is as viewed from the drivers seat, not from the front of the enngine bay looking backwards!).
The above system faults could be attributable to anything which might prevent air delivery to the exhaust manifolds (e.g. disconnected or blocked SAI delivery pipe, disconnected or blocked vacuum pipe etc.)

The car runs fine, it must have been a really cold start for this to come up.

P1415 = Secondary Air System, Bank 2, Drive Cycle D: Signal. Land Rover CD lists P1415 as being the result of a disconnected or blocked SAI delivery pipe, diconnected or blocked vacuum pipe, etc.......
