Glen is on track
when the gauge goes to full it indicates a short in the wire, either from a faulty sender (not sensor and 1 wire only) or the wire has come of the sender and is touching the head or block
the coolant sensor sends the signal to the ECM to switch on the fans and adjust mixture as the coolant temp gets to set parameters
If your temperature gauge reads hot as soon as you turn the ignition on it's probably due to a faulty temperature sender. The link below may show you the location of that sensor:

The sensor is very easy to change. It just screws into the block. It may have a 'brass' appearance and have either 1 or 2 electrical wires attached.
To change it, simply disconnect the wire and then use a wrench to unscrew it.

Well let's see....You did not say the temp of the heat changed inside
your car... if it does NOT ...I say the gauge is messed up....
A thermostat usually sticks open or closed.. if it is broke.
If it is defective the car will start getting hotter under a load going
uphill or....when the a/c is running it will not put out cool air while
sitting still at a stoplight or heavy traffic..
