Warped rotor, this would also cause the steering wheel to shake back and forth.
Randy... Would this also cause the loud thumping sound we get when applying the brakes?
Don, many things can cause the sound. Yes a rotor will do this. So will really worn out tie rods. And a brake caliper will if a bolt is missing. And a strut can do this.. But these are severely worn out. There were warning signs to them (except the caliper).

If is just a fast pulsating shake then your rotors are warped. The brake pads are pulsing in and out of what used to be a flat rotating surface on the brake rotor. More erratic shaking than just a pulsationg in pedal and steering wheel would suggest tierod issues and if it is a truck, idlerarm and pitman arm play. Fast braking also ativates the abs system which pulsates the brake pedal only where as, if the steering wheel is violently shaking could mean more than just warped rotors. Have the suspension checked for play to know if you have safety issues in the suspension to worry about. Dont be afraid to ask what they look for and if they can show you proof of a bad part. Always make a mechanic prove and not just tell you it needs it.
SOURCE: thumping noise when apply brakes 1990 Accord
yes my cv axles had to be replace cause of the same thing but when you replace one side you need to do the other side at the same time cause when 1 goes bad the other is not that far behind . i know from experience
SOURCE: Thumping at front passenger wheel area
if the noise isassociated with "wheel speed" then it is in the rolling parts... axle hub bearing brake rotor caliper wheel or tires...if it goes away on right turns then you are unloading or separating the issue then...so a hub /wheel bearing /axle issue is most likely...does your brake pedal pulse when you feel it..(riding the brake while driving)..does the steering wheel shimmy ?
SOURCE: Steering wheel vibrates thumping noise
At what speed do you feel the shake and does it only happen when you apply the brakes?
SOURCE: There is a loud thumping noise coming front passenger side
Okay, I had a problem like this with my 1990 Jetta, except there was no thumping noise. My steering wheel started to shake, that also make the whole front end wobble back and forth (side to side) - I took to a mechanic and had both whell bearing replaced. I must tell you that wheel bearing aren't something a mechanic can just check to see if they're good; once they get in there, it's a matter of just putting new ones in. Now, while different makes and models vary as far as cost of repair, (as well as mechanics prices) I paid a mere $400 dollars for my Jetta, which is a foreign made care, which also tend to cost more to fix than American made cars. Regardless, this is what it sounds like may be the problem with your vehicle. You may want to take it to a shop that specializes in alignments and brakes. It could be a loose brake caliper in the front. My brother had a car that was doing that same things, so we took the (front right) tire of, and he was missing both bolts that hold the brake caliper in place. Notice if the car brakes normally or not and if the shake increases, decreases or stays the same. If and when you take it to a mechanic, be sure to give them as much full detail as to what the car is doing so they can diagnose the issue as best as they can. This will save you from spending money on any unecessary parts and labor.
