The filter has to be really blocked to prevent fuel flow and even then the cart will idle
I suspect the your fuel pump is a problem either from a faulty fuel pressure regulator or relay for the fuel pump
I am not saying that it is not the fuel pump , just to check the other things first

Fuel in filter and start pouring gas in carb, but won't stay running

Make and Model, year of vehicle?
I'm assuming the vehicle won't run unless you pour gas into the intake. If the vehicle will start and run while manually feeding gas to the engine, you can rule out spark and timing issues. Usual suspects in fuel system are dead fuel pump (electrical or mechanical?) clogged delivery system ( fuel line, filter, injector or jet) or intake leak (bad gasket or seal, vacuum leak, stuck valve). 25310438-za4bqvjhdrn3arnyccyp5xaz-5-0.jpg

1987 mercrusier 180hp wont stay running unless i pump the gas

Could be a small amount of rust got into fuel filter from sitting empty, try changing fuel filter before worrying about the fuel pump.Filters could be partly plugged and its always smart to start with the cheaper fixes first.

HaVE A 96 1500 PICK UP WITH V6 VORTEC, GETTING ONTO FWY TRUCK DIED. NOW IT WILL CRANK OVER, HAVE SPARK AND FUEL TO CARB. WONT START. IF I POUR FUEL INTO CARB IT WILL RUN. ANYIDEAS IAM SITTING ON FWY NOW

Sounds like you lost a fuel pump, although they usually don't quit while being driven. Have it towed and get a fuel pressure check. That vehicle has to have very close to 60 psi fuel pressure to run. Have a new fuel filter installed also. Plugged fuel filters are the most common cause of fuel pump failure.

Starts up but wont stay running

Hello. Change the fuel filter first. Then pour a bottle of a fuel additive called seafoam into your fuel tank. This will clean the entire engine, remove any water, clean the carb, or fuel injectors and more. After you add the seafoam, drive at least 5 miles. If it improves things, repeat the seafoam. J.

I have a 1989 cadillac deville 2 door front wheel drive i just changed the fuel filter in it and i pour fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank. when i pour gas in the carberator it gives a little start to...

absolutely. if you pour gas in the carb, and it runs, then dies, you have a fuel delivery issue. if u put a new fuel filter on , and then let it sit for a year, it can still be a problem. fuel gums up and clogs up stuff, so it could be the jets on the carb are clogged, the fuel bowl is clogged with gummy fuel, the fuel lines could have a clog, or it could be a bad fuel pump. but if your like me and you forget to drain fuel and then dont drive the car for a year, you have something clogged up with bad gas and it needs to be cleaned / rebuilt.
