Fuses ok,light in dash tested and works. But check engine light does not come on when you turn on the ignition. What else should I check? This is a ford ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L V6-245cid engine (pushrod)

find a wiring diagram for PCM , PCM turns on the light ,find connector with control wire for mil light , disconnect the connector from the PCM . Jump B+ voltage to control wire , does light work ? If yes you have a PCM problem , If it doesn't light you have an open circuit .

The instrument cluster (10849) carries out a display proveout to verify that all warning/indicator lamps and monitored systems are functioning correctly. When the ignition switch (11572) is in the ON position with the engine (6007) off, the following indicators will illuminate:

  • CHECK ENGINE/malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
  • CHECK GAGE warning indicator.
  • Charge system warning indicator.
  • Anti-lock brake warning indicator (ABS).
  • Safety belt warning indicator (60second proveout).
  • Air bag indicator.
  • An indicator is inoperative - CHECK ENGINE/malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
  • Bulb.
  • Circuitry.
  • Instrument cluster printed circuit.
  • Powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650).
  • GO to Pinpoint Test N .

Testimonial: "How do you go to pinpoint test n? Thanks for the info and answering my post so quickly. I would like to run a test to hopefully pinpoint what I need to fix"

What pin point test "N" tells you to do is find the connector at the PCM that has check engine light control signal wire . Then it says to disconnect that connector from PCM an then take a fused jumper wire from battery + voltage to the control wire for engine light . If it lights the wire is good an PCM is bad . you can find a wiring diagram at http://bbbind.com/free_tsb.html

I have a pic of the connector , can't upload it here . Powertrain Control Module (PCM), 4.0L
    C111
RH Rear of engine compartment, through safety wall , one connector C111 . pin # two check engine light control circuit . pink with lite green strip . Put battery power to this wire an see if check engine light comes on . If it does you have a PCM problem . If not you have a wiring problem .

I have no power anywhere. i can jump solenoid and engine turns over but no fire. i suspect ignition switch but would that cause no power through out the car?

The fact that you can turn the engine but not get it to fire would suggest the battery is ok. The fact that you have no headlights, dash lights etc. would point to blown fuse/fuses. Even if the ignition switch was faulty you should still be able to switch the headlights on. I would check the fuses and the ignition switch wiring.

I turn the key and nothing no lights on dash battery is good and fuses!!

Check for power to the ignition switch via test light or better a multimeter, could be a blown fusible link, usually housed in engine bay , or faulty ignition switch...
Work your way forward from the battery, testing power to and through all fuses, connections.

Do the headlights or hazard lights work...

6.5 diesel : ok so I have an issue as to where I was trying to start truck and hardly had power then went to Jump it and the dash went dead. Took a test light and have power to fuses and still nothing to...

if by removing the wires there is no current flowing to earth I would be checking for a short at the terminal box and continue to isolate units until the fault is found.

1993 suburban is not starting and it is not the battery. What could it be?

IF BATTERY CABLES OLD THEY WILL CAUSE POOR GROUND HIGH RESISTANCE IN STARTER CIRCUIT CAUSING STARTER NOT TO CRANK ENGINE.CHECK TO SEE IF DASH LIGHTS AND GAUGES WORK WHEN YOU TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH IF NO CHECK IGNITION FUSES.IF FUSES OKAY IGNITION SWITCH IS OPEN NEED REPLACING.NOW IF BATTERY VOLTAGE IS 12.6 VOLTS, BATTERY CABLES GOOD AND IGNITION SWITCH AND FUSE OKAY. STARTER SOLENOID OR STARTER FAULTY.REMOVE STARTER TAKE TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORE THEY WILL TEST STARTER.TURN OFF RADIO BEFORE REMOVING NEGATIVE BATTERY SO YOU WONT LOCK OUT RADIO.

My dash will not light up. The needles work, the turn signals work, all the warning light work, I removed the dash and checked the bulbs and they are ok, all the fuses are in good order. i have no idea why...

Turn on your front and rear lights but not the headlamps, if they are on but the dash lights are not, check the dash lamp dimmer and check every fuse electrically using a test probe or multimeter. If the external lights are not on, again check fuses electrically and then go through each area of the circuit, like switches, relays etc. Again, use a test probe which you can buy from any auto parts store, clip the clip to a good ground (on the vehicle body) and probe each connection with the pointy end. If the probe lights up, power is present, if not, go back and start again. Fuses should light up the probe on BOTH ends of the fuse. If the probe only lights up at one end of a fuse then that fuse is faulty and should be replaced. If the fuse does not light up at either end of the fuse, then that fuse does not have power connected (as the ignition should be OFF, you will see most fuses without any power) or the light switch is turned off or faulty.

Instrument panel went dead

Checked Every fuse in the fuse box (no small task). This includes #4 - Power point Instrument Panel, #14 - Day time running lamps (auto lamps doesn't work nor does auto lock), #27 - ignition switch run feed, #35 - Instrument Cluster, #41 - Instrument Cluster, #42 - Delayed Accessory, #45 - Ignition switch run/start feed, #102 - Door locks body security module, #103 - Ignition switch, #110 - Ignition switch, & #116 - Ignition switch. But I also check all other ones as well, they all register OK. AC panel & radio work. Turn signals work. Mileage does not work, trip computer does. So, basically, everything works except auto head-lights, auto locks, and the dash cluster (no MPH, RPM, mileage display, Fuel, Temp, Tran Temp, and Oil Pressure).

Whole Electrical system shuts down when ignition key turned

Try cleaning the battery connectors at both ends and make sure the ground at the frame is clear of rust. If that check out, drop the starter and have it bench tested

Dash lights,signal lights dont work

Check the fuses. The proper way to test fuses is as follows:
With the ignition 'ON' check both sides of each fuse with a test light connected to 'ground' which is the battery negative terminal, or any clean unpainted metal part on the vehicle's chassis which you can clip on to will suffice. The test light should light on both sides of the fuse. If it lights on only one side, replace that fuse.
If after this check you find that all fuses are good, and the problem still exists, you need to test for 'power' and 'ground' on the dash light and turn signal circuits, in order to find where the problem or 'interruption' in the circuit is. If you feel up to it, wiring diagrams can be obtained at your public library.
