How can I replace the climate control switch on the steering wheel?

REPLACING CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH

1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable from battery.

2. Remove airbag module (See AIRBAG REMOVAL below).

3. Remove speed control switch mounting screw and remove switch from steering wheel.

4. Reverse procedure to install.
AIRBAG REMOVAL
1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable from battery.

2. From the underside of the steering wheel, remove the two screws that secure the driver airbag to the steering wheel armature.
CAUTION: The horn switch and the clockspring pigtails connected to the back of the airbag module are fragile. Do not pull on these wires to disengage them. These must be handled carefully to prevent damage to the horn switch and/or the clockspring assembly.
3. Pull the driver airbag away from the steering wheel enough to access the three electrical connections on the back of the airbag housing.

4. Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness connector for the horn switch from the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector, which is located on the back of the driver airbag housing.

5. The clockspring driver airbag pigtail wire connectors are secured by integral latches to the airbag inflator connector receptacles, which are located on the back of the driver airbag housing. Depress the latches on each side of the connector insulator and pull the insulators straight out from the airbag inflator to disconnect them from the receptacles.

6. Remove the driver airbag from the steering wheel.

7. Reverse procedure to install.

you must check the contact switch on the steer wheel.

Your brake lights and your turn signals go through the multifunction (turn signal) switch. It is common for these switches to short internally. Partial disassembly of the steering column is required to replace it. The airbag stsyem must be disabled, then the airbag removed from the steering wheel. Then the steering wheel must be removed to access the screw in the front of the switch assembly. The rest is pretty easy... a few screws holing the lower cover of the dash, the shroud around the steering column and a few connectors to deal with. (see pictures of switch assembly below)
There are two types of these switches available for 2000 S-10. With cruise control and without cruise control. The one WITHOUT cruise control is much more expensive!

YOU NEED TO DISABLE AIR BAGS.FIRST. TURN OFF RADIO THEN DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.WAIT 20 MINUTES FOR AIRBAGS DISCHARGE.THEN REMOVE AIRBAG IN THE STEERING BY REMOVING SCREWS BEHIND AIRBAG IN STEERING WHEEL.

TO REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. FIRST TURN OFF RADIO TO KEEP FROM LOSING CODE. DISARM AIRBAG IN THE STEERING WHEEL BY REMOVING NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE WAIT 20 MINUTES FOR AIRBAG TO DISCHARGE BEFORE REMOVING AIRBAG AND HORN PAD IN STEERING WHEEL.ONCE AIRBAG IN STEERING WHEEL OUT.YOU CAN REMOVE THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH.BECAREFUL REMOVING AIRBAG IN STEERING WHEEL CARRY IT AWAY FROM BODY WITH AIRBAG HORN PAD POINTING UP.IF YOU DROP IT.DONT PUT IN BACK IN STEERING COULD DEPLOY ON INSTALLATION.

the switch is underneath the steering wheel. the steering wheel needs to be pulled to replace the switch. the airbag is in the steering wheel, and a trained tech with a puller is needed to pull that wheel off without screwing up the airbag.

YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE STEERING WHEEL TO REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH YOU HAVE TO REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN.YOU NEED A STEERING WHEEL PULLER AND A LOCK PLATE TOOL TO COMPRESS LOCK PLATE TO REMOVE THE LOCK PLATE RETAINING RING.DONT KNOW WHAT YEAR VECHICLE YOU HAVE.BUT DUE TO AIRBAGS MAKE SURE YOUR VECHICLE FRONT WHEELS POINTING STRAIGHT AHEAD.TURN OFF RADIO TO KEEP FROM LOCKING IT OUT.REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE WAIT 20 MINUTES BEFORE REMOVING STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG.DISCONNECT AIRBAG ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.WHEN REMOVING AIRBAG CARRY AWAY FROM BODY CAREFULLY LAY AIRBAG FACING UP PUT SOMEWHERE SAFE FROM CHILDRENS AND PETS. YOU NEED A HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL TO LOOK AT AIRBAG CLOCKSPRING MAKE SURE IT CENTER.BEFORE REMOVING OR CLOCKSPRING WILL BE DAMAGED.IF YOUR TRUCK OR CAR DONT HAVE AIRBAGS NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THE AIRBAG REMOVING PROCEDURES. YOU JUST NEED TO REMOVE THE STEERING WHEEL.

The problem is the coiled ribbon contact under the steering wheel (we call it the clock-spring contact) that connects the stereing wheel controls to the steering column wiring harness, this is a printed circuit that is coiled to allow the wheel to move and still have a psychical contact for the wheel switch's and the airbag, anyway replace that contact coil, u must disarm the airbag to do this repair, follow the factory procedure to do this or serious injury can result if the airbag fires.

disconnect batt.wait 5 minutes,push brake several times,locate airbag fuse and remove.this is improtant as you will have to remove drivers airbag.there are 2 round plastic caps covering the 2 airbag bolts located at back of steering wheel by the cruise switches.remove caps remove the 2 8mm bolts.remove airbag,set airbag away from you with plastic cover of airbag up.replace switches.reinstall airbag,reinstall fuse.reconnect batt.
