Well code 77 is nothing - you are supposed to hit the brake pedal and the gas pedal during the KOEO test. Code 77 is no movement of the gas pedal. I guess I would start with the statement about driving it home with no problems on the battery, but problems after the alternator was installed. Have you checked the charging system to see if it is charging around 14 volts ? It could be overcharging which would cause electrical problems. Unless you can figure out what changed when you replaced the alternator, you will have to find out if you are dealing with a fuel problem or ignition to proceed with any troubleshooting. Ford products are famous for ground problems. You might recheck the ground connections, especially in the engine compartment.
May be the starter or fuel pump. Might not be getting gas after turning it off. the gas may be settling to fast into the fuel pump and none staying in the engine. My friends SUV does not start unless you pump the gas pedal. Not an expert but its what i know it could possibly be.
i think you might be right it sounds like your engine is getting over fed fuel you are probably not getting very good fuel mileage either the 3.8 and 5.0 would defintely require the same volume of fuel it is probably playing havoc on the pressure regulators i would get another fuel pump and start there
THe problem is that there is no fuel due to fuel dirty fuel filter. When you are at constant speed as 50 mph, you don't have to press gas pedal to much requiring instant fuel. However every time you need to press the pedal, you can experience this problem. Now it is really clogged up ,so fuel is not delivered to the fuel distributor so it can't start. Need to replace fuel filter.
'till you do some in depth testing of all systems, I'd place equal weight on every possibility. Make sure you cover the basics like fuel filter etc before getting crazy with it though. Also check cap. rotor, coil and wires. Idle cylinder pressure is different than that encountered when driving. This additional pressure will cause ignition spark to seek a better easier ground,(not the spark plugs where it should be going) causing missing under load. After checking , if you haven't found anything, its time to begin testing fuel pump pressures, modules and controls. good luck
