I have had very similar issues. Drives fine one moment, but when trying to accelerate, go uphill anything which requires extra power from the engine it sputters, coughs, and has issues. Issue was a defective ignition coil. In some cases coils can be bad and not be apparent right away or only under certain conditions.

Repair wise it isn't to terrible to deal with. Remove, the wipers and the cowl/deck plate just under the windshield and it's pretty basic. Just make sure you put the plug wires back in the correct order. Although this may sound like a daunting task, it's really not.

Thanks
Bill

My 2004 did same thing, along with shutting down. Turned out, the cowl was letting rainwater drip directly onto PCM. Ford has a Technical Service Bulletin out on this. They knew the design is defective. Drip guard rerouted, PCM replaced, at our expense.

My 2003 mountaineer has a sputter on the fwy when I give it gas. I know it's not the coils changed those out and the plugs too. I think it might be a bad fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter or just a dirty fuel filter . Any ideas ? Thx

If the sputter got real bad, I could smell what smelled like weed eater gas inside the cabin. As you could also imagine, there is a loss of power.

Why does my 2004 Mercury Monterey seem to loose power when I'm driving uphill. also smells of gas.

It's losing power going up hills because the vehicles catalytic converter is plugged ,because it's running rich . Too much gas going into the cat . You need to have fix before your check engine light comes on an you have a code P0420 and or a P0430 catalytic converter efficiency . Well i guess it doesn't matter the cat is bad already . Can cost up to a grand .

When i steer my 2003 mountaineer it makes a squeaking noise inside and a clicking noise outside

Not sure about the squeaking noise, possibly the rack-n-pinion or a dry seal. The clicking is a CV joint or joint in the steering system needing replaced.

I have a 2004 Mercury sable 24 valve. It sputters and now it will cut off when I try to accelerate.

When was last fuel filter change? For that matter when was last tune up? Seriously, sounds like fuel filter, especially this time of year. With big temperature swings condensation (water) forms in fuel tank. Run a bottle of STP gas treatment through it then change fuel filter.

Jeep wrangler bucking

how long has this been happing..one tank of fuel or more, could have been bad gas, replace filter,, put gas dryier in fuel tank..if it continues could possibly be transmission related..the reving down doesn't sound like transmission though if tansmission was slipping it would rev up..good luck

I'm having the same problem with my 90 2.3L Ranger. I replaced the EGR Valve back in August and the truck ran fine (but the gas mileage was bad) until late December . I knew it needed an O2 Sensor back in August but didn't replace it until last Saturday along with the Idle Air Control Valve, Plugs and Wires. The truck ran fine for a couple minutes then started running like a VW bug! My code reader is now throwing out an EGR failure code, so I guess i'll take the 4 month EGR back and get a new one, and see what that does!_549.jpg
