If I have it right, the alternator will not turn. This might likely be a frozen bearing, if in fact this part is causing the problem.
If the fan clutch is not turning, it may also be a frozen bearing, if this part is the problem.
If the crank pulley is turning, then the motor runs, and the problem is one of the other units that are driven by the serpentine belt that brings the power from the crankshaft.
You also may have a frozen idler pulley, or a frozen water pump, or a frozen power steering pump.
God bless your effort.
You should be able to turn the crank by turning the alternator pulley.
You may need to remove the belt to make sure none of the pulleys are locked up and restricting the crank from turning.
sounds like your fan belt is slipping ! hence that why the battery light comes on because alternator isnt turning or turning slowly and your power steering pump wont be turning also ,,,making steering difficult ! fan belts can be adjusted at the alternator i think thanks :)
Belts squeak for the same reason tires do when they spin. They are slipping. Something isn't turning as fast as the belt wants it to. On ford it's usually ether the idler sprocket or the tensioner. If you remove the belt and try spinning all of the pulleys by hand.( note the crank wont spin freely) you will usually be able to tell witch ones slipping.
as the a/c motor is a pump (resistance to turning),if the belt is not adjusted correctly(too loose)it will squeel, and the alternator will not produce enough power to keep the battery charged up.you should always retension the belts after about 1k/1 month after fitting new.
adjust so that the longest run of the belt, between pulleys, has 1/2"flex
Hi:
I am not sure what was the reason why your battery needed replacing, but if it was dead, I am guessing your alternator wasn't charging it?
Take off the serpentine belt on your engine, and check to see if all accessory items turn smoothly, to include the power steering pump, AC, alternator, and the idler pulley. If any of these wont turn , the car won't crank either. If you totally remove the belt, you can see if the car will start, and go from there, but don't let it run too long without the belt.
It is the harmonic balancer, ie. pulley. It is a two piece--with rubber between the two. It will, especially if belt dressing or other lubricant has penetrated it, slip. I just ordered a new one online for $70. It is a fairly common problem.
drain engine coolant.relieve belt tension .and remove the drive belt.remove upper fan shroud.remove fan or fan and clutch assembly.remove water pump pulley and coolant hoses from water pump.remove water pump bolts.then remove pump from engine.pay attention to bolts location because they are different lenghts.clean water pump gasket mounting surface dont scratch .or pump gasket wont seal and leak .apply sealant to water pump bolts.install water pump with new gasket.if gasket paper put a sealant on it.torque water pump bolts to 30 ft lbs.if you got a 2.2L engine torque water pump bolts to 18 ft lbs.install coolant hoses on pump .install water pump pulley.install fan and fan clutch assembly.install the drive belt .and the upper fan shroud.fill the radiator with coolant.then run engine to check for leaks.WARNING AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE SO CAR WONT BE CRANK BY ACCIDENT. ALSOOOO DONT FORGET TO TURN OFF RADIO FIRST BEFORE DISCONNECTING BATTERY SO YOU WONT LOSE YOUR RADIO CODE.
Here are a few choices. If equipped with A/C the air could ice up the compressor and stop the a/c clutch, shredding a belt. Width of belt pulley, if narrow pulley has fat belts and fat pulley has narrow belts, then possible to shred. Has anyone cranked down the damper on the crankshaft? If the bolt comes loose or the woodruff key is worn you could get a wobble from the crank.
