Check the fluid level and quality in the transmission. Its dipstick is on the left (from sitting inside the car, US driver's side) often hidden by hoses/cables. It is the only fluid that must be check while IDLING. If the fluid is low and coffee colored, time for a drain/fill or maybe 3 drain/fill cycles. Only about half the fluid will drain out. 3 cycles of drain, fill, drive-a-little with fresh fluid can often clean some deposits out of the trans. You can also try , on the last fill, to put in a bottle of Trans-X additive. It has helped a lot of people with 'delayed engagement' problems. The low-high marks on the dipstick are only about a pint apart - not a quart like engine oil so, refill a tiny amount when close to full. Without driving the car, difficult to suggest anything else. You might post the issue at w w w.subaruoutback.o r g for more help.

do not muck about get the car to an automatic transmission specialist. Sounds like serious malfunction of your auto transmission. Could be something to do with either a transmission cooling system failure or damaged bands in the auto transmission .
Check the auto transmission fluid level on auto transmission fluid level dip stick may be low ?.

My2001 ford tourus goes into all gears, but won catch any gear it just idles why.is that?

No forward gears or reverse, I would check the fluid level first. Otherwise your torque converter or transmission oil pump may have went out.

2001 ford ranger 3.0 auto trans swap out with a 2002 auto trans

On Chevy transmissions there is, on the input shaft, there are two (2) little tabs at the 12 and 6 O'clock position or 180 degrees from one another. When installing the transmission these can often break leaving the transmission useless. It will need to be taken apart and checked on. If it is broken then you can easily replace it from a junkyard trans. (just look forward to a day in the yard tearing apart a transmission) and replace it accordingly.
Keep in mind when reinstaling the replaced transmission, that you HAVE to line these up by spinning the Torque Converter untill it slips on easily. otherwise it will just break again.

Auto is in drive but still has forward motion with engine off

Are you on a hill? vehicle will roll if your handbrake is not applied. Peaple often make the mistake of thinking their transmission in "PARK" will hold their vehicle on a hill. PLEASE people do not rely on this, use your handbrake!!!!! The park pin inside your transmission is very small and is not designed to hold your car, this is what a handbrake is for.

Transmission problems

Automatic? It won't move in overdrive, drive, 2, or 1? If it won't it sounds like a burnt forward clutch. You have tried all these positions?

Transmission

yeah its something else..

on the selector is a bushen (something like a washer) its proberally worn and needs changing. I'd recommend taking this to a auto technician mechanic ,, cause after its replaced or adjusted you will need to adjust the kick down cable as well..

it may also be a mountain(engine or transmission) mountain rubber.
