Replaced transmission fluid and spark plugs
SOURCE: Auto Transmission
Try shifting the trans manually through the gears and see what happens, doesnt cost anything so,possibility valves are sticking in the valvebody after sitting so long, and manually shifting the car will force some of them to stroke in their bores unless REALLY stuck.Could also be shift solenoids.Scan for diagnostic trouble codes.A bad solenoid will have set a trouble code.Just FYI,1991 was the first year Ford went to all electronic trans,i had a 91 Sable.
SOURCE: transmission doesn`t make gear shifts
No matter what the issue the trans will have to be torn down to some degree to check the shift solenoids and the valve body, also a self test for trouble codes will be needed to see if anything shows up in the powertrain control module memory.
SOURCE: my transmission wont shift from 2nd to 3rd gear
did you drop the pan replace the filter and add four to five quarts,If still a problem try doing a full transmission flush at a quick lube.
A transmission flush with Lucas trans tune up will probably fix your non shift issue, try this first before looking into a new tranny !
SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2
check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine
There are several things that could cause that.
> Replacement transmission not equipped with overdrive
> Overdrive solenoid in replacement transmission defective
> Overdrive control circuits damaged or loose pins or connections.
> Gear shift linkage or cable out of adjustment
> Transmission range sensor malfunction or out of adjustment
Since you have a computer-controlled transmission, it would be better to ask the onboard computer that question....you will probably get a much more definitive answer.

Cause
DEFINITION: A large engine RPM increase is noted in fourth gear, Drive range, with little or no vehicle forward speed increase. First, second, and third gear operation are normal. Shifts into fourth gear are soft or do not occur. Fourth gear ratio is 0.705:1.
Automatic Transmission Fluid Level
Low fluid level
Transmission Main Line Pressure
Low transmission main line pressure
Oil Filter Assembly
ā¢ The oil filter assembly (100) is missing, plugged, or damaged.
ā¢ The oil filter seal assembly (101) is missing or is damaged.
Control Valve Body Assembly
ā¢ The 3-4 shift valve (362) or the 4-3 manual downshift valve (360) is stuck or binding.
ā¢ Debris is found in the passages of the control valve body (301) or of the control valve body spacer plate and gasket assembly (396)
Case Cover Assembly
Distortion or damage occurs at the manual valve (404) or at the case cover (401), causing PRN oil leak.
Driven Sprocket Support Assembly
A plugged third clutch oil passage in the driven sprocket support assembly (609)
Fourth Clutch Assembly
ā¢ The clutch plates (500-502) are worn, damaged, or misassembled.
ā¢ A missing or not seated fourth clutch spring retaining ring (601)
ā¢ A damaged spring assembly (602) or piston (603)
ā¢ Worn or damaged fourth clutch piston seals (604, 605)
