When I turn on my head lights my dash board goes dark. Turn off headlights the dash lights come back on. Any ideas what is causing this?

Jul 15, 2014 - OK, just picked up a 2000 DX hatch, automatic. Stock interior everything except previous owner changed gear selector stick with an aftermarket .

Sounds like the connection behind the instrument cluster is loose, i had a customer with the same problem only on a 2012 camry and it turned out to be the connection on the cluster. I just adjusted the tension on the connection by bending the contact pins a little.

it could possibly be one of the tailight globes shorting internally try taking out the double filiment globes to see if it changes anything

you may have a faulty relay, power is eaten up by your lights causing others to loose power. change the relay.

Turn the headlight switch to the off position (not auto) and depress the overhead light button, located just below the cargo light switch, several times ( 3-5 times) until you hear a bell then the headlight switch actually works as indications show around the knob.

Have you tried turning up the dash light dimmer switch as bright as it can go? I will dim slightly but will still be alluminated

Start by setting your auto headlight switch to off if this solves it replace your headlight switch If your car is equipped with daytime running lights there could be a short bridging them with your auto head lights look for broken or frayed wires do this also if you have installed or had someone install an aftermarket stereo or speakers/sub woofer, amplifier. Hi, have you checked to see if the bulb for the parking light/side light is working in the headlight?

This sounds to me like you may have a faulty headlight switch. If the switch is on the steering column, you will need to replace the whole multi-function switch assembly, if it is on your dash panel, you should be able to just replace the actual headlight switch. Hope this helps.

The dash lights and tailights are on the same fuse link. everything else will work like brake lights and turn signals but this one fuse causues alot of problems. Sometimes this fuses isnt marked on your cover so you might have to look in the maual to find the right fuse . some will be under the hood some will be under the dash .
