Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't have a garage to put it in so I need to find a way to get it closed. Please help!

1/10/16 - my hatchback will not close - I tried with the glove box button, that didn't work either. I don't have the ability to put the car into my garage so I really need help figuring out what to do. Anyone have other suggestions to try?

The tailgate catch has a fairly simple operation that can be checked while the tailgate is open. The striker or keeper (that is the part bolted to the body) generally resembles a rod or some sort of diameter that the claw of the catch latches onto when the door or tailgate is closed. It is the action of pushing the catch against the striker as the tailgate is closed that allows the internal mechanism to engage.
A screwdriver or similar can be used for testing purposes in place of the striker. If the catch will engage on the shaft of the screwdriver with the same satisfying click(s) as when the tailgate usually closes it will most likely mean the catch is satisfactory but something has slipped out of adjustment - the striker (needs moving outwards) and/or the rubber buffers (needs moving inwards) will need adjusting.

If the catch will not engage on the screwdriver the catch is damaged, loose, rusted or possibly frozen. There is also the possibility of an internal linkage problem.
In cold weather the freezing of door catches can be a problem. De-icer might help but some gentle heat is the best answer.

If all else fails the tailgate can be held closed with some thin rope as a temporary measure.

You should be able to close it by hand by pulling it down and shutting it.

Testimonial: "It is electronic and I was told never to shut it manually. How do you know when the button in the glove box is on or off?"

Check all the fuses and there are two fuse boxes. If none are bad you have no choice but to shut that hatch by hand. The switch in the glove box that defeats the hatch opener most likely has an indicator on the dash, but I don't see a reference to it. The problem could be a BCM or other problem but you must secure the vehicle first.

Have the compressor and lines checked for leaks again using the UV light dye detector. Sometimes a slow leak that takes 1 or 2 weeks will not show up immediately.
