Proper oil in transfer case ? most transfer cases have a separate oil reservoir, heavy duty off roading sometimes makes a hole in oil seals and oil leaks out , I allways wash off all my oil seals surfaces after a visit to the MUD PIT saves me a ton on fixing seals

2008 Element. Runs like a charm, just had its BIG tuneup done this spring (tires, timing belt, etc). Makes a VERY intermittent high-pitched whine. Doesn't seem connected to anything-not just when cold,...

still bad? doing old zero answer posts. (my bag)
finding noise is hard, and takes skills and can be dangerous.
my guess ????? it makes noise only moving.????
only clue is front, and presume outside of car and not under dash.

if car makes noise moving only, it can be dangerous , driving or even trouble shooting.
does it make noise in turns, or bumps,or loads (hills) or in all gears. or down hill, or coasting.?????
when it starts, does letting of throttle stop it, or more throttle>
or down shifting.? or cutting throttle and shifting to neutral.
I added many check to Doesn't seem connected to anything

my guess is the whine will progress to full time, many times this is true.

good FSM cover noise, here is more.

When I accelerate or decelerate I hear a clanking noise like chains on metal, I think it is coming from my transfer case. We just completed a cross country move towing our u-haul w/it. Our mechanic friend...

I would worry

Pull the transfer case & take it a part

You most likely will find the chain is loose
& wearing away the case from inside, that is
pretty much what your saying.

Don't install someone else's used junk from
a salvage yard, that is what the pros will suggest,
fix yours.

Have a 2004 Avalanche 1500 that has rear end noise that get louder turning to the right and goes away turning to left. Also upon excelatation noise not so loud coasting noise get louder have checked rear...

Suspect a worn left side spider gear or it's bearing in the differential. If a limited-slip differential, the left side clutch may be grabbing somewhat. In any case, the differential will need to be removed from the case to service any worn or defective components. Rear end service is not for inexperienced mechanics. Have you checked the fluid level in the differential? Hope this helps!

Loud whine then knock in overdrive

well, without hearing the noise myself, i could guess that the torque converter clutch might be going bad. the torque converter is the part that transfers the power from the engine to the transmission via viscous fluid motion, the converter also has a clutch that internally provides a direct connection inside the converter for better fuel economy. but as with anything labeled as a clutch, it wears down to a point where is slips. the noise your hear could be the torque converter clutch slipping. i owned a 90 astro van with the same drivetrain that made a noise similar to what you speak of up hills. while driving up hills, fully depress the accelerator and if the clunking noise occurs, then the whine goes away as you accelerate faster in a lower gear, very likely this is the case. you would have to have a transmission shop diagnose further. i drove that old van for five more years cause i didn't want to pay to have transmission repaired. it can be very expensive.

Whining/grinding noise at deceleration

We have the same problem at our shop. We haven't rebuilt the front differential yet. We tried 3 different shafts on 2 different Jeeps and the noise is on both just the same. By greasing the front driveshaft cv joint, we got he noise to quiet some, but it is still way to loud. With the driveshaft out, the noise is gone. We are about to buy a new shaft from the dealer for $600. There are some service bulletins about some noisy driveshafts.

Whining/ howling noise / 2007 Durango

i'm thinking that your tires need speed balancing :),, if is not the tires then one of your bearings on the hub needs replacing or the exhaust has a hole somewhere.
