Metal shavings indicate mechanical failure of the internals
you don't mention the make and model of the transmission but from experience some transmission have a badly designed band servo housing the is prone to breaking at the adjustment area
this gives a clunk as the bands are engaged , band slippage and drops metal into the pan
The fix is generally in car and relatively cheap
pull the pan and check for cracks in the internal castings around the band adjustment screw area
If it is more, have it diagnosed by an accredited specialist transmission shop and get a detailed quote for repairs before you accept the " tranny is s***** answer , need a new one" answer

SOURCE: Transmission wont shift into reverse

By the grayish color, fluid being thick, and metal shavings, the clutches are pretty much worn out. It's time to either rebuilding your transmission or just installing a good used one. The fluid normally should be a reddish color. The gray is from the actual clutch material going away.

Hi!
Base on the information gaven it seems that your forward clutch pack is worn, thats the reason you have seen that metal shaving in the transmission pan.So get your transmission repair.

2003 F-250 Super Duty. Why is it noisy in drive?

I would examine the color of your transmission fluid first. Is it bright red or is it turning dark? Does it smell burnt? These are signs of wear.

Next step is to drop the pan and examine for metal shavings and excessive organic band material. If these are present, you are pretty much in need of a transmission rebuild.

I have a 03 GMC duramax, change the transmission oil and found metal shavings in the pan. Is this a problem?everything seems to be ok.

Depending on the mileage, some particles are to be expected. There's a lot going on inside an automatic trans. I've even seen large flakes of metal in a pan and the vehicle went for years without issues. Were the shavings brass, aluminum or steel - do you know?

Transmission slipping in 95 blazer

You could try a transm. drain and refill and replace the fluid filter while doing so. When you drop the transmission pan (after draining), check for how much metal shavings are in the pan. There should be a magnet on the pan to collect shavings. If it doesn't look like too much, you could proceed with the filter change, then replace gasket for pan and put pan back on, and refill transm. and try it. Sometimes a fluid and filter helps, sometimes not if damage is too severe.

I found a round magnet in my transmission pan i need to know where it came from and how to replace it

This round magnet is supposed to stay in the bottom of the Transmission pan to catch any metal flakes, shavings that may exists. This magnet should be cleaned, and replaced into the original spot in the transmission pan where you found it.

Oil pressure drops, metal shavings, and somehow my oil level incr

My truck does the same thing, pressure never drops to 0 but drops low, replaced the oil pressure sensor and same thing happened. My oil is always black and has a lot of metal in it, next time you change your oil, pour a quart of transmission fluid into the oil and let it run for 10 minutes or so, this should thin out the oil and possibly unclog some of the ports that may be gummed up. What could have happened with the dipstick is that the old oil was too nasty to drain all the way, with the fresh oil it could have thinned out and raised the level, try the transmission fluid trick and see what happens, next possibility is to have the engine scoped to see whats going on inside

Ford explorer

There a few differnt things to look at.
First look at the univeresal joints make sure they are ok then I would pull the rear differential cover and see if there is any gears broke in it ( a little messy). If you are convienced that it is the transmission take the pan off and see if there are any metal shavings in the pan (messy as well). There is a magnet in the transmission pan that will collect the metal shavings ( note there is also a magnet in the differential for the same purpose). I do not know your skill level of mechanics but, a transmission does take a lot of specialty tools and they are not cheap so I would recommend take it to a transmission shop. If you do it yourself there is no warranty if something happens. Most reputable shops have good warranties. I hope this has helped you and good luck.
