The front heater hasn't been blowing as hot as normal this winter and the defrost hasn't been all that effective lately either. Don't know what's wrong!

Because of the issues I've had in the past with the defrost and the fans being slow to heat/ weaker than normal I had the heat and defrost on '4' to get the windows defrosted and while it took a while it worked. On the way home the air coming from the front vents became really weak/ weaker than it's been (barely anything at all comes out and you don't feel it unless your hand is on the vent) and it seems like it's...blocked? You can hear the heater working just not much is happening with the vents. The check engine like came on and the front heat still doesn't work right. The rear heaters are fine. Not sure if it helps but it's been extremely windy and rainy today if that could do anything?

Hello Katherine, If your car has a cabin filter, I would check to see if it needs to be replaced.

Testimonial: "So I looked behind the glove box and there's a longish rectangular area that looks like it can come off but half of it goes farther behind the dash and I can't reach the other what looks like a latch, let alone pull it out. How do I access the filter?"

Hello Katherine, I'm sorry I am not familiar with your make and model. I changed a cabin filter on a 2009 VW Jetta. The filter was plugged up. The heater and a/c worked like new after the change.

It's unfortunately the heater core that's leaking. It's very involved to replace it if you have mechanical aptitude, you can change it yourself to save money.

No heat just cold air

Is the gauge showing the engine is warming up to normal temp ?
Are the heater hoses getting hot ?
If the heater core is getting hot, it could be a blend door problem. The blend doors direct air thru the heater core and the ac evaporator among other things.

A/C will only blow through defrost vents

Common question on this site. On late model cars, the vents are controlled by blend door motors. Small electric motors open and close doors to direct air flow.
Chances are you have a blend door that is stuck or a failed motor.
The default position is the defrost to make sure the windshield is always clear.
Someone will need to look behind the dash to see if all of the doors will move on demand.

Remove the plug from the heater control valve to check water flow.If cabin heats up OK then the fault is electrical. If not my be airblock/leak in system.

The doors that open and close in the heater control unit are ran by motors. It sounds like a motor has quit in yours. When turning on the defrosters the motor closes the door to the heat for the floor

It sounds like you have a blend air door stuck. This is in the housing of the heater a/c blower unit under the passenger side of the dash. There is a motor on the top of the housing that could possibly be stuck or on working.
