It sounds like the fast idle speed control valve is defective or sticking due to sludge build up, remove it and clean it with carb spray, if that doesn't work replace it. Here is the part number and a picture of the valve which is bolted to the intake manifold.

Yes it is, but just having the key near the ignition is enough to start the car. If you can turn the ignition with the broken key, hold the broken part in your hand and see if it will start. Hopefully the chip isn't damaged. I know that when GM keys are replaced, they glue the old key under the dash to make it work. Hope this helps.

CD Changer needs to be replaced... You can buy one online from Ebay. Make sure you have the correct model...

Please check your idle controller whch is normally located near the air intake.Sometimes cleaning them and putting them back solve this problem.

I would have a look at your coolant sensor, if it's reading the wrong temperature, it will cause a idle problem. If you can, get a scanner on it to verify it's operation.

Probably not the filter, the Fuel Pump is located under the Back Seat.

try pushing the 4 wires on the radio supression relay into the connector, then try starting it... does it start, run, then die? those connectors ****, i've had the same prob. have you let it huff on some ether? (starting fluid) does it come to life? that would confirm weather or not it its fuel related. my 740 i was loosing voltage to my injectors 10 volts and under, causeing them to inttermittantly not fire, caused by a bad connection at that supression relay.

I have a 1996 740il in mint condition, she runs very bad in the cold, idling and stopping, but no problems in mild, and worm temp!! I just changed the plugs, and had no change in cars perfomance
