As I was driving last night, I felt a loud pop and all of a sudden I began to lose steering power. I however did make it to where I was going but the steering wheel will not turn at all now. Could someone please tell me what the problem may be. I have no clue but i'm thinking the power steering pump or a belt. I don't have light flash to check if leak or anything.
1. Check that the serpentine belt is still intact and still in position over all the pulleys on the engine including the power steering pump.
2. Check the power steering fluid level. If very low or empty you obviously have a significant power steering fluid leak which could be from a ruptured flexible hose, a leaky hose connection, a leak from the power steering pump itself or leaks from the fluid seals in the steering rack. If the PS pump has been run with very low fluid it will have been pumping air and will be damaged.
3. If the PS pump itself has failed you will obviously lose PS assistance and a bad pump would need to be replaced.
4. Since you have not checked anything on the car no one here can tell you the likely source of your particular PS failure.
5. The steering wheel should still turn but if the car is not moving it will be extremely heavy and difficult to move.without PS assistance so don't attempt to drive it in its present condition.
Testimonial: "Turn out it was hose blow out. Friend of mine and I was try figure out how to fix. We crawl under car and found those hose with hole look like blew out hose. So we get replaced hose from local autozone & install them our self. Steering is much easier :) So I called local auto shop where I bought van from, I was curious. They said "it would cost you 400 dollar for repair them" Know what? It only cost me 10 dollar to get parts & fluid and our self repair."
See if the serpentine belt broke as when they do it can sound like that and you will lose steering assist as well as alternator and water pump function .
