SOURCE: how to replace headlight switch

The first step is to remove the knob from the metal stem of the switch. Look on the side of the knob and you will find an opening. With a small screwdriver, push to release the tension on the stem and pull it out. Then you have to remove the plastic bezel in front of the instrument cluster. There are screws on the side, so open the drivers door and remove those screws. There are screws around instrument cluster, remove those and several other screws. Remove the plastic bezel, at this point you should remove the threaded washer that holds the switch in place. After that you can remove it from the back. Disconnect the wires, etc. Save the stem as you need to put it in the new switch. Installation is the reverse of what you have done.

I wrote a guide on the Corvette Forum for replacing the headlight gear, which involves taking the headlight motor apart and putting it back together:

1985 corvette headlight close but wont open

I did mine about 3 year ago, C4 headlights are electric motor driven. Clean the contacts, if they are clean, you will have to replace the gears, it's really not hard, just be sure to clean everything as you re- assemble the motor drive. I used synthetic grease. The drive can be unscrewed from the housing and then changing the gears is easy. Most gear sets have directions with them. I got mine from Corvette Central. (about 50 for the set, replace both gears) Be sure to remove any debris.

Headlight on 1985 corvette

Head lights have a reed switch built into the unit. if a gear is stripped / missing a tooth the headlights will continue to run. You can replace the gears for around $50.00 for a set. I would go with the , metal gears for the few dollars more, especially in cold climates where there is snow.

1985 Fiero: headlight doors will not open

Your headlight motors are bad. Pre-87 cars had a terrible problem with this, upgrade them to the 87-up style. Firebird/Corvette motors are the same.
