Auto or manual? As always , auto , use the gear release tab located on the gear lever. Its covered and you will need a small flat blade to open it. Once open, use the flat blade to press the white tab down and at the same time shift the gear lever to N
with the ignition on press the brake can you her aclick from the gear lever area i suspect not the lever is more than likely stuck in park the soleniod that releases the gear lever is not being powered the most likely cause is the brake light switch on the brake pedal you can get it out of park by removing the little plug near the gear lever and pushing something like your key in to the hole to manually release the gear lever there is also a relay under the j gate that may be faulty/dislodged or the release soleniod itself faulty
I have an 87 aries wagon that it happened to. Spray lots of WD-40 on it. It is usually due to a rusty/corroded cable, and wd-40 should loosen it up. Take the cable off of the lever, and see if you can shift it out of "1st gear" if you can't or if it's tough, spray some WD-40 in/on the cable, and hold the clutch in, and shift to random gears a bunch of times. it may take a few sprayings, but if the cable isn't too far gone, you can do that. it wouldn't hurt to spray it on the lever where it pivots.
try this.you have 2 shifter cables.one is select cable the other is shift cable.first put the transmission selector lever in neutral.then move transmission shift lever to 4th gear.depress clutch to if necessary to shift.move the shift lever to the 4th gear position until contacts stop.then you turn the adjuster turn buckle so the shift cable eye aligns with the eye in the gear shift lever.when installing the cable eye. make sure the flange side of plastic bushing at the shift cable end is on the cotter pin side.the cables should be adjusted so the clearance between the shift lever and both stoppers are equal when the shift lever is moved to 3rd and 4th gear. move the shift lever to each position and check that the shifting is smooth.
Ok ready to stand on your head under the dash?
It's doable... there is a flange connected to the gearshift lever under the steering column. If you remove the lower dash cover where the fuses are, you should be able to see it when you move the gear shift lever... look around on the floor of the truck to see if you dropped a star-headed bolt or two... these bolts worked loose on my superduty and made shifting very difficult..it was an easy fix... let me know how you do on it.
