How do I adjust idle on 2009 Toyota Corolla 1.8 liter

There are no provisions for adjusting the idle . The computer through the use of the IAC valve - idle air control controls the idle . There is a base idle set at the factory an should not be changed or messed with . What idle problem are you having ? low or high Could be IAC valve or air passages plugged . High idle the throttle plate could be gummed up an sticking ! If you were to change the base idle you cause check engine light problems .

Ive got a 96 caprice 4.3l that idles real high in park and calms down a little in gear but rpms are still to high...replace pcv valve and vacuum lines...next likliest cause?

Idle air control motor. Mounted to the side of the throttle body. Pull it, clean it and the hole it came out of. Brake clean and a tooth brush. If it still idles high, replace the motor.

My van is idle high i cleaned the throttle boady and it idle down the a few hours later its high idle again why i replaced two sensor and still idle high

Hi Alexandra, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair

There are several things that can cause high idle, but the 2 most common problems are as follows.

(1) You could have a vacuum leak somewhere on the engine. Here is how to check for that issue. Here's what I want you to do: Buy a can of CARB Cleaner and while the engine is running spray around the Intake Manifold, the manifold is the thing the throttle body sit on. Also spray around all the vacuum line as well. If while spraying there is a change in the idle speed then you have found your leak. If there is no change then move on to step 2.

(2) Sometimes when you have a high mileage vehicle parts begin to ware out or can also begin to stick in place. Here something you can check. Idle Air Control Motors can start sticking from corrosion build up and can cause a high idle issue. Here what I want you to do. Start the engine and let it idle, while its idling I want you to tap on the Idle Air Control Motor If it idles down to normal idle speed replace the motor. The motor mounts onto the throttle body and most of them are round. Once you replace it and start the engine you'll notice that its idling real high, :This Is Normal, just let it idle until the engine controller resets the idle speed to normal.

Hope this helps and should you need further help please visit my auto repair website. http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu LS. It has "idle system high" reading on PC. I was told to replace idle control valve and that was a dead end. I then replaced the throttle position sensor and the problem still...

ECM might be sending the wrong signal to the Idle control Motor. Verify the signal into the motor. A vacuum leak can cause high idle also, listen for air leaks. Just thought of this, make sure something is not keeping the throttle plate stuck open. Debri or some other obstruction.

I have a 1990 S-15 with 4.3 motor idles high when you start, idles down , set and idle for a while it starts idling up and down.any idea's?

Could be a faulty idle air control valve.
The computer controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the throttle body thru the valve.
You could unplug the valve when the idle speed is close to normal, then shut the engine off and restart to see if the idle speed is still in the same place. Unplugging the valve will also set a trouble code and turn the warning light on.

Just started idling rough, sometimes stalling

Shot in the dark here without knowing the vehicle but it could be an Idle Air Control valve starting to fail. An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or PCM (powertrain control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the idle air control motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. An idle air control motor can fail one of two ways, either the motor short circuits and stops working or the motor will develop high resistance and cause the idle air control motor to react slowly, either failure can cause the engine to stall at idle. When a trouble code scan is performed it sometimes won't always detect a failed or weak idle air control motor. To check the idle air control motor remove the unit, with the wires connected turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine, the idle air control should move in or out. If the idle air control motor does nothing it has probably failed, replace it with a new unit and recheck system. Note: while the idle air control motor is removed clean (use aerosol carburetor cleaner) the passages the idle air control uses to control idle air speed, also inspect the idle air control for a build-up on the seating (pointed) end and clean as necessary.

High fast idle at start up.

On most newer cars there is a fast idle motor controlled by the computer that will hold the fast idle till the engine reaches a preset temp in the computer then the engine should drop down to the set idle according to specs for that car. If the oil pressure continues to stay low after the idle goes down you may need to replace the oil pressure sending unit or if worse case the oil pump.

Hyundai lantra

The baseline idle is set too high.  Meaning someone has screwed the idle screw out too far.  Probably because the Idle Speed Control Motor is dead.  Same thing happened to me on the same model car. Replacing the ISC Motor is extremely easy to do, a replacement cost me $135AU.
