Is it possible to get to the A/C compressor clutch without taking the compressor off of the engine?

I need to replace the A/C clutch on the Compressor and would like to take off the clutch without taking the compressor off of the engine.

From my years of experience i would never replace the clutch and the hub only,i would rather to install a used compressor that could be more reliable then partial repair,a/c clutch gets damaged for one reson and thats only when the compressor pistons give up or freeze up,replacing a clutch will not help the issue, good luck.

The reason I want to replace the A/C clutch is because the Pulley is shot and if I have to pull the clutch to get at the pulley I thought it would be easier to replace the clutch.

Air condition doesn't kick on after i changed the orific

First, that raises the question of why did you replace the orifice? Was it full of metal particles? Like possibly a failed compressor?

Then, why are you trying to put oil in it? I seiously doubt that there was much oil loss in just replacing an orifice (maybe 1/8 ounce?) Unless you flushed the system, there shouldn't be any need to add any oil at all.

Did you actually check the clutch coil to see if it was any good? Is it possible the clutch is burned up?

Then there is the question of how did you go about "bypassing" the compressor? You do understand that the clutch is controlled by the A/C compressor clutch relay, which is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module? Poking around on the wrong wires with the wrong setup can cost you a PCM in a heartbeat.

Then there is the question of which engine your Expedition is equipped with, and whether it is equipped with manual or automatic temperature control...these systems operate completely different and are set-up differently for the various engines available that year.

Replaced the ac compressor but now no power to compressor but have power to low and high pressure switches. checked relay under hood, relay and fuse in cabin. what am i missing?

Put a jump wire in the high pressure switch plug. If the compressor works. replace the high pressure switch. Let me know and we can go from there.

Elantra 2004 when i put on the a.c the vehicle cutting off and the compressor making a noise and smoking

Possible that the compressor is jammed or struck and causes a high friction on the drive that the engine stalls on idling.
Remove the belt off the compressor to confirm and confirm the jamming with a manual check. now start the engine to confirm that it revs up freely.
You might have a faulty compressor unit which needs a very serious look, take estimate before deciding to repair or a replacement would be ideal. Also check the solenoid clutch.

My clutch for the compressor is bad. 98 nissan froniter 4cyclinder . Is it possible to change clutch without removing compressor? Or should I just change entire compressor out?

It is possible to change the clutch out if you can find someone who will sell them. Check out some place like surpluscenter.com, check out the power transmissions tab, and click on clutches, and you may find one. Otherwise, it's difficult to find the clutches by themselves. You'll need a puller to get the old one off.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

Can i replace ac clutch without removing ac compressor on 97 achieva with 3.1 engine

The only thing that would prevent you from doing so, would be the ammount of room in front of compressor that you will need for the tools. Other than that shure.

1999 GMC Sierra a/c clutch replacement

Sounds like it is more likely the high pressure switch on the accumulator acting up (a common issue with older vehicles). To verify this, try putting 12v on the clutch with a jumper (but only for a few seconds each time) to see if it engages. If it is the pressure switch, you may have to replace it and the schrader valves as well.
If the problem is an electrical connection in the clutch, yes, it can be replaced without removing the compressor but that must be done very carefully.
