I'd start by checking ground connections. How are you checking voltage at the relay? Across the coil, or coil to ground? Coil to ground is important to check.

There are 3 light bulbs in a series circuit. If the voltage of the one bulb is 4 volts, what will the voltage of the other 2 bulbs be?

* 12 Volt system; 4 + (bulb 2 + bulb 3) = 12 volts
bulbs 2 and 3 will total 8 volts.
* Unusual set up for auto lights to be in series. the usual is the full 12 volts for each bulb.
* A series CKT would mean if one bulb failed, they all fail. (like old Christmas lights, you have to check them all to find the bad one.)
* Wattage of bulbs will have an effect on the brightness of each bulb. Higher wattage will affect the voltage drop across that bulb.
* if your trying to "drop" a higher voltage to a low voltage device. Then you need to take in account of the device "loading" to get the right voltage and power (amps) to also drive the device.
* You will also find that using a bulb as a voltage drop will change with the current draw. Higher draw will increase the voltage drop across the bulb (it will get brighter and lower the voltage on your device.)
* In series resistance was used (in old days) as a voltage drop for arc lights or even arc welding. If the line shorted then the resistance coil (nichrome wire) would take up the load, preventing the breaker from tripping out on a short.

12 volt battery test

I have seen many times a 12 volt car battery pass the diagnostic test performed at a repair shop but still fail while being used in the car.
A simple test to do at home is the cranking amps test. Place your 12 volt meter on the battery and check for 12 volts. Then looking at the meter crank the car over. If the voltage drops to 10 volts with all accessories off then the batteries cranking storage amps is weak. A bad scenerio would be the battery drops to below 9 volts. Below 9.6 volts there is not enough electricty to provide good spark to fire the engine.

12 volt system, hard starting, was told probably an amperage issue. How do I test it and how many amps should I be getting

there is no amperage reading as it is a variable depending on the current being used bu the systems
however voltage on the other hand is adjustable and readable
for a fully charged battery the reading should be 12 volts ( actually 13.2 v) and with the engine running at 2.000rpms the voltage should be 14.5 -14.8 volts
hard starting ( slow cranking speed) can be from a bad battery ( have a load test done at a battery shop) as it will read 12 volts but that drops to below 9 volts when a load is applied such as a starter motor operation
as a result the amps available will also drop and the starter has difficulty turning the engine
dirty battery posts and terminals (should be shiny clean ) or loose terminals will also create too high a resistance for the starter to work
you should take the vehicle to an accredited auto electrical shop where they can:- load test the battery, charge voltage and regulator operation
they can also attach an amp meter clamp around the positive cable to the battery to read the current draw when cranking the engine to use as an indication of possible starter faults
that reading for the starter operation can be as high as 450 amps for a few seconds but if it goes over 500 amps ,then that may indicate a problem starter especially if the battery has a low cc reading
( battery capacity is read as cc amp hour and for a small car would be 250-350 cc ah and for a larger vehicle can be 400-650 cc ah)

2000 chevy silverado. alternator problems. start truck and meter shows about 11 to 12 amps for a few minutes then goes up over 14. Did this for several days. today started and went right to 14 amps then...

amps or volts
11 to 12 amps indicates nothing but if it is volts then it indicates that the alternator is not charging the battery
Battery voltage is 12 -13.5 volts and when charging is 14.5-14.8 volts dc
the rest of your statement indicates that the alternator or voltage regulator is faulty and you should have the charging system checked by an accredited auto electrician

318 starts but wont stay running blows black smoke out tailpipe. It has new fuel pump, filter, timing chain plugs,wires...

The older chrysler products have a ballast resister on the firewall that is used for dropping the voltage to the ignition coil. During a start procedure, while the key is turned all the way in start position 12 volts bypass the resistor forcing a high output of coil voltage. When you release the key to the run position 12 volts goes ito the resistor & a lower voltage of around 6-7 volts comes out, & goes to the coil.
What happens, is the resistor breaks inside and no voltage is coming out the resistor. Thus only a start condition exist with no run.

We are trying to install a pionere radio and without the power antena/system control wire hocked up the speakers have no sound when you hook it to 12 volts the tweeters click what should i do

The antenna wire, witch should be yellow. is not supposed to be hooked up to 12 volts. It is only meant to be used as an on censer . If that wire is the reason your speakers are not working then the stereo is defective. That wire should have 12 volts coming out of it when the stereo is on. And hooking it to 12 volts could have damaged your stereo. I would look at the wire diagram again before doing anything else.

So anyway if you are not using the power antenna wire cap it off and leave it alone. you do not need it. Check all of your connections again and follow the wire diagram.
Good luck.

Clarion stereo in1997 mercury marquis wiring hook up to amplifer

make sure the speaker wires in the car do not have one side grounded.the output on the clarion is a floating output and cannot be grounded.the best solution is to look at the wiring on each of the speakers, and match them out to the ones on the clarion.the most common colr code is white front left, gray front right green rear left and purple rear right.each speaker has a plus and minus.mixing them up will result in the speakers being out of phase and result in poor bass performance.i would wire the wires directly to the clarion using crimp connectors.the first thing i would do is power up the stereo out of the car to 12 volts, and using a speaker make sure you have sound coming out.the yellow wire which is the clock/memory is a must to be connected to constant 12 volts or no sound can result
