SOURCE: Brake Rotor Replacement Ford Escort 1997

The rotor is not held on by the big nut, it slides on and off, only the wheel holds it on, the clearance between the rotor and the front hub which the large nut holds on is very small, rust forms and the rotor gets stuck, use a hammer or a large piece of wood if you plan to reuse the rotor and hit it from side to side, spray penetrating oil to loosen the rust, it is a bugger but it will come loose, then make sure to wire brush all the rust off or wheel retention may be compromised.

SOURCE: replaced alternator on 1997 ford escort and battery indicator lig

Battery light is on and battery is not holding the charge because you have at lest one cell damaged
because of accidental short-circuits between the battery terminal. So most probably you need to get new one (in Sears starts from $49,99) For fuses location follow this link please
Good Luck

Your starter is located on the top of the transmissions bell housing on the firewall side. It is easily accessed under the vehicle, or by removing the battery and battery tray.

SOURCE: changing the water pump on a ford escort 1997

2.0L Engine
SOHC ENGINE
See Figure 8

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the car and support it with safety stands.
CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the timing belt.
  3. Unfasten the timing belt tensioner bolt and remove the tensioner.
  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
  5. Lower the car and disconnect the heater hose from the water pump.
  6. Unfasten the three bolts and one stud from the water pump.
  7. Remove the water pump.

  2. Install a new gasket and the water pump.
  3. Install the water pump bolts and stud to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  4. Connect the heater hose to the pump.
  5. Raise the car and support it with safety stands.
  6. Connect the lower radiator hose to the pump.
  7. Install the timing belt tensioner and tighten the bolt to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  8. Install the timing belt and lower the car.
  9. Fill the cooling system with the proper amount and mixture of coolant.
  10. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Hi,
You have to check and replace the spark plugs, ignition( if there is still sparks coming out ), and replace fuel fitler( drain also the fuel line of old petrol ).
You need a good technician to restart and tune it up!
Hope that helps you out.

Have a 1997 ford escort 2.0l No sound when I engage the starter, it happened about 6 months ago. But started working again. Not sure if it's starter or solenoid, or both??

I would check all the cables and connections on the battery and the starter for corrosion or looseness. The solenoid is mounted on the starter. I would have the starter tested, most parts stores can test the starter and solenoid for you for free. I would also check to see if you are getting power from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid when the key is turned to the starting postion.
