I have a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 3.5L with automatic transmission. 48K miles. When I start the car after sitting over night, I hear this whirring/whining noise from the engine compartment. I goes away after the engine runs for a minute or two. no performance issues noted... just the strange noise. Any ideas on what it could be?
My power steering fluid was about 1/2 inch below the "LOW" level marker. I figured that therem ust be a leak in the system somewhere, so I took it to the dealer. They told me that the noise was made by the power steering pump due to low fluid level. I must say that I noticed no loss of steering ability. Whatever, the repair (probably replace the lines) should be covered by my extended warranty. Thanks for your reply. Most of the time these types of noises are due to belts. Your whining noise might be comming from dry belts in order to pinpoint your problem have a jug of water ready before startup open the bonnet then startup if the noise appears pour water over the belts if noise goes away replace v belts

As far as I know the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe did NOT have a CVT transmission, rather a 4 speed automatic. Mine went well over 300,000 miles (see photo) with original trans and engine.
the same thing happen to me ,your axle may have come out, and it is hanging, not lock into your transmission.also what can cause that to happen. you could have a front broken motor mount it sit below the front of your engine
Some vehicles had filters and some didn't. If you have a filter it will be inside the transmission pan, and in that case there won't be a drain plug. You just take the pan off and try to get as little on you as possible when all the fluid comes out. MUCH easier if you have a lift.
If you don't have a pan then the drain plug is on the bottom. Manual transmissions don't have a pan, but sometimes the automatics didn't either.
Fluid: Hyundai Manual Transmission fluid if it's a 5 speed, and Hyundai ATF or Mitsubishi Triple Diamond ATF only if it's an automatic. Dexron and generic ATF does not fair well in these transmissions.
Call a dealership parts department with the VIN number and see if there is a filter kit available for your vehicle if it has an automatic transmission.
HI Santa fes are good cars thay just are very touchy when they dont get there fluilds changed. Every 30,000 miles change the coolant and trans fluild. Also the timing belt has to be changed every 60,000 miles or around that. im not saying if you go a mile over bad things are going to happen just keep up on it and it will run forever. I have seeen tham will 200,000 miles on tham and still going strong.
The filter sits on top of the transmission. look under the hood on drivers side it screws right on top of the transmission. It looks like an engine oil filter.
