My Subaru Forester is having trouble shifting gears after having had the clutch system replaced

After having a broken clutch fork and a bad clutch I had the clutch system fully replaced on my Forester clutch, clutch fork, master cylinder, and slave cylinder. Now I am having trouble shifting in and out of gears. Second gear grinds and fifth also has a lot of resistance. The clutch engages really high up in its travel. Any ideas?

Your mechanic did not adjust the new master cylinder actuator shaft for the correct pedal free- play of about 3-4mm. This shaft can vary in length (normal manufacturing tolerances) which is why there is an adjustment. This is a simple job that takes about 10 minutes. Move the driver's seat backwards, remove the the lower dash panel to access the clutch pedal. The slave cylinder may need rebleeding as well.

Trouble shifting gears in 1991 4wd Subaru Loyale. PLZ HELP!!!!

Once the freeplay is set it should not alter, the driven plate linings may have come loose or the pressure plate may have a broken spring. If so replace as a kit including the throw out bearing and spigot hearing.

I have just put a brand new clutch (clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing, spigot.bearing) in a Subaru Forester, flywheel was machined, it feels great, can select all gears easy, pedal height and...

Interesting problem. A bent fork is not impossible, but this would usually make the clutch not release fully. Try increasing the pedal free play, so that you can guarantee the slave cylinder is not holding the clutch slightly open. If not this, then it all has to come out again ...

I own a 1996 subaru outback and can get it to go in all the gears except 5th gear. What may be the problem?

When you say you can get it to go into all gears except 5th .Dose it shift good in all other gears. This could be a problem with one of the clutch cylinders . Subaru has a pritty good transmissiom and if you are not haveing a problem with 4th gear i would think clutch . Look under the dash board at the clutch pedal on the inner fire wall if there is oil on it the master clutch needs to be replaced . Also check the fluid resivor if that is low there is likely a leak in the clutch system and if fluid can get out then air is getting in . The olny other thing besides the transmission needs to be rebuilt is the shift tower its at the base of the stick shift and is pretty much a unit including the stick and the parts attached to it . Look for these things and hopefuly its not a shifting fork inside the transmission

Clutch is bad is it hydraulic or not?

if you are having troubles getting the car into gears then it will be hydraulic it will either be your master or slave cylinder that will need to be replaced ,but if the clutch is slipping then it will be your clutch plate that needs to be replaced

Obd11 code p-0751 trans has no reverse stuck in 2nd gear

If this is a manual (5 speed) - you may have a broken shift fork. You'll want to either replace just the shift fork, or (best) - purchase a clutch kit for the truck as well as the shift fork; the kit will come with everything you need to replace the clutch. It is not necessary to replace the clutch components, however it's best to while you're in there, that way you know everything is new and good. Otherwise, after pulling the transmission, and verifying that the shift fork is the issue, then replace the shift fork. (It's best here, to replace the throw-out bearing, (it attaches to the shift fork) as it is most likely damaged.

I was down shifting from 4th to 2nd and i heard a bang. i am unable to shift gears. i was told that there is a fork between the transmission and gear shifter that i sheared off. True??? If so is it on the...

There is a clutch fork and it's bolted to the transmission bell housing. It's what pushes on the clutch bearing, disengaging the transmission from the engine, which allows you to safely change gears. If it's broken, you will surely have to replace that clutch fork in order for you to do any gear shifting in the future.

I have a 98 Subaru Forester, and the clutch has finally given out...to replace the clutch I was quoted between $800 - $1300 - so its not worth it to have it fixed. Engine runs fine, shifting has no effect...

Sorry for your loss, you should be able to get it changed for less, around 600.  Did the clutch slip at all before it broke?  Can you now put the car in any gear with engine idling w/out the pedal?  If yes, then the clutch is worn to nothing.  If no, then it's a broken pressure plate or clutch cable.  Does it feel like there is no pedal pressure at all?  This indicates no cable or hydraulic pressure (if your is hydraulic) and a cheaper fix.  Good luck!
