You will need to reset the vehicle immobilizer aka the anti theft system that will not allow the engine to start no matter what you do. First you will need to spend around $200.00-$400.00 (it's a lot better then spending $1000.00 to have someone do it for you!) on what is called a car key program tool you can find them on Amazon for a reasonable price (I ordered mine from them and they come with plenty of credits so you can do what is needed) once you have the tool plug it in to the OBD plug in your vehicle and follow the prompts to deactivate the immobilizer and reactivate the airbags allow the tool to do its job, once it says complete just disconnect from your OBD plug and simply start the vehicle. You may need to toy around with it until you figure out how to do it right but once you got it that's it, then you can charge people $$$ for getting their cars operational if you do the car key program tool will pay for itself after one or two times and you will have a tool that everyone will be envious of! Lol
best of luck
SOURCE: I need the key to start engine or by-pass the immobilizer.
There is a chip in the key on the newer cars. The dealer should be able to send your information to Hyundai and order a new key. Pricey. Check with another dealer.

If you have lost all keys, you must see a Toyota dealership to have them reseed the immobilizer and cut a new key or keys. They shouldnt charge you more than 2-2.5 hours labor plus the cost of keys. I do these all the time

SOURCE: Ignition key code problem
"...or is there a receiver in the ignition that could be faulty?"
Hi, I think you will find that there is a little coil in the steering column near where the key goes in which "reads" the key. Whether that is faulty or not is another matter. The best way forward is to get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" and run it on a portable computer.
Hope this helps.D
