Try to get a copy of parts schematic from the Mazda dealer for the rear brake parts . Check on line to see if that diagram is available on free download. Check the aftermarket brake spares to see if you can get a copy. Or buy a workshop manual for your car.from a auto spares shop.
get a new one but perhaps this is not the problem brake boosters seldom go bad. press on brake pedal a couple times until firm. then start engine while holding brake pedal the pedal should move down towards floor upon start up. if this is not true then check to see if the air line from the manifold to brake booster is in good non cracked and make sure you are getting good manifold pressure as well. repair hose or manifold if your not getting good pressure then check booster again as described above
it is possible that your brake pistons have siezed in the bores due to rust from not changing your brake fluid at regular intervals
You will have to pull them out and free them up unless the rust has eaten into the cylinder, if that is the case you can have the caliper reconditioned or buy good 2nd hand ones from the wreckers, I personally would buy new ones
if you set the hand brake then the red brake light on the dash should come on to remind you that it is on. if it is properly adjusted and the cables don't bind that light should go out when you release the hand brake. neither condition should cause the check engine light to come on. that light being on probably has nothing to do with the hand brake. you need to have somebody that has a code retriever tool take a look and see what code has set to turn the light on. most of the big chain car parts store will do it for free, idea being that they can then sell you some parts. you don't have to buy anything, but that's why they will do it. once you know what it is then you can decide what to do about it. oh and it's not a good idea to use hand brake in place of foot pedal, but i think you already know that. hope that helps
you can buy brake line at a parts store that has ends all ready on it . you may have to buy a hand bender if there is sharp bends other wise bend by hand . every bend will shorten length . it is best to take old one off and match up .
