The odometer/trip meter on my Mercedes-Benz 124 series (1990) only works intermittently. Does anyone know where I can get it fixed at reasonable cost?

I do not know where you live but if you look for a speedo shop they are out there you will have to remove the cluster and then remove the speedo head and give it to them. that is the cheapest way i can think of.

Cqr drives then gauges go haywire then dies sits for a time starts drives for a while the gauges go haywire then dies

It sounds like an intermittent alternator/voltage regulator problem. I would suggest testing the alternator.
