run fault codes
indicates an electronic problem with an overheating component
possible ECM ( check using a known good unit as a replacement), crank/ cam position sensor
If it's a1990 check the ECM (computer) for the number 1228253. Those ecm's are junk and get another one get the replacement that gives no trouble 16198264. Clean the ends of all three battery cables and replace bolts too.
It is on the front of the motor just under the rear part of the waterpump in the timing cover. But I doubt it is the problem. Sounds more like a bad crank sensor. Which is located behind the crank pulley.
Check ecm for part number 1228253. If it has this number in it replace it with a 16198264. Gm had trouble with that ecm for a cutting off problem. Mine would stall driving down the road and when I would put it neutral it would start back up and not have any trouble for the rest of the day. You must set the tps with a volt meter or scan tool.
Check ecm for number 1228253. If it has this one in it you will have a cutting off problem. Gm replaced these with #16198264 The cam sensor magnet on the cam gear will deteriorate and give problems. This will require removal of the timing cover.
You may have a faulty crank sensor again. Next time it cuts off hot, spray or pour water on it and then try to see if it will crank. These cars had a cutting off problem with ecm #1228253 but most of them would start right back up. If it has that number on it replace it.with #16198264 or newer number. Get a delco and not an aftermarket ecm..
