I HAVE TRIED TO SET THIS IDLE LAST FALL AND I THOUGHT I DID IT NOW THE IDLE IS DOING THE SAME THING. IT'S ALL OVER THE PLACE IT WILL IDLE FINE THEN RACE TO A HIGH IDLE THEN GO BACK DOWN THEN COME UP AGAIN IT'S JUST TO ERRATIC.. LET ME KNOW HOW TO SET IT PROPERLY AS I KNOW I'M NOT DOING SOMETHING RIGHT THANK YOU...BILL W
So you must have the 351 cu. in., carbureted engine? Here is a link to the idle speed procedure. BTW, your VECI label (vehicle emission control information) under the hood somewhere, shows the correct idle speed number.

I am not sure how you set the idle the last time but the ford motor company uses and idle air speed motor control and when they get fouled and don't respond to commands then you get idle problems. They are a pain to deal with and not cheap.
Bill, you could possibly have a vacuum hose leak. With motor running, open your hood and listen carefully for a hissing sound. If you hear one, try to pinpoint where it's coming from.
