Have to install new CV axle on front driver's side 1999 Quest. Noticed response for a 1996, but things change. Any good videos out there and if not, decent full description incl. warnings?

Any and all details appreciated. I have delved into some substantial jobs, but as I never did this I sure would appreciate advance warning as to where I might need a specialized tool or where I can expect to have to use a little extra force and so on. Really hate taking a vehicle apart only to find I need to run out and buy something, as normally, that vehicle is the only thing I have to go back out and get the whatever! If I do have to remove a ball joint, I sure would like details on that also as a friend noted on the CV axles he worked he only had to remove complete brake assemblies. I really hate surprises...

Follow the other description. Things don't change much and if your handy with the tools then just be confident in what you are doing. It will only come apart and go back together one way. Sound like you won't have a problem.

I have a 93 Nissan quest minivan if the front end sounds like it is hitting something when i turn right would i only have to change the passenger side cv axle?

Could be axle, wheel bearing or both. I would recommend to change them both. Every time the shaking occurs, it damages both. Good luck.

How do you pull the drive shafts out of toyota avalon from the transmission its a front wheel drive

Hello,

Changing these are not to tough actually.
  1. First you need to remove the tire rod ball joint from the spindle. (This is the middle ball joint on the spindle) (the spindle holds the wheel) Remove that bolt.
  2. Now take a mallet and hit the side of the spindle a couple good times and the arm will come loose.
  3. Lift it up and pull it to one side.
  4. Now the next thing to do is remove that lower ball joint. This is the bottom bolt on the spindle. You will need a pry bar and while your hitting the side of the spindle you will pry down until the lower ball joint and the spindle separate. You may need to pry the clamp apart too. This is where you removed that bolt from. This one can be a pain but is necessary.
  5. Next you need to get the get a Axle bolt remover the size of your axle bolt in a 1/2 inch drive.
  6. You will now remove the axle bolt.
  7. Now you you want to tap on the end of the axle rod as you hold onto the spindle and tap the axle lose from the hub.
  8. Once the spindle moves out from the axle then turn the spindle and move it just to one side of the axle.
  9. You should now have full view of the CV axle.
  10. Now get a long pry bar and get back there with the pry bar where the axle connects to the transmission and while prying on that CV axle pull out on it to. It may take a bit of fooling with as they can be stuck in there pretty good but eventually it will pop out of there. A note not to put your face in the path of the CV Axle or it may split your head when it comes popping out of the transmission.
  11. Now the CV Axle is out.
  12. Reverse steps to install new CV Axle.
  13. When you install the new CV axle make sure it goes in the same way it came out and make sure it "clicks" into place real good.
  14. Repeat steps to do the other side.
Regards, Tony

Front end makes noise when turning. Could this be tire rods or axle problem. I had motor mounts replaced when the mounts went bad could this the moving motor cause damage to front wheel area?

yes, popping when turning is usually caused by worn out CV joints in axles. Check for torn CV boots. When a boot tears, dirt gets into the joint a wears it prematurely. If you find tears, it is easiest to replace the whole half-axle than to fix the CV. Let me know if you have more questions.

Can not get new cv axcel all the way in

Use a rubber hammer and tap the axle in....if it is IDENTICAL to the old one,the new spring retainer is most likely stiffer on the new one than the old one on the old axle.Lube the new axle spline area before installing.

My front differential is leaking!

I cannot see it, but I am guessing that you need to replace your axle seal. To do this, you have to pull your CV shaft out. Remove the tire, remove the caliper from the top of the rotor. Using a hammer on the back, remove the rotor. Take off the spindle (axle) nut, separate the axle (CV shaft) from the hub. Replace seal. It should pop right out. Good luck!
