Incorrect grade of oil can cause this, however, at high mileage, like many other components, the ticking occurs due to wear & tear. The best is to replace the lifters

Ford f150 4wd ticking doesn't do it when first started ticks in park and at stop quits in reverse quits when acceleration comes back as smooth out driving back of motor or in transmission

Ticking like that is normally the valve lifters. Make sure the oil is up to the correct level. Try adding a can of STP Oil treatment. It should quieten it. The ticking stops under load and as the revs rise. The valve lifter are hydraulically adjusted by the oil pressure.

It is a known issue

Before you change lifters try this trick. Drain 2 quarts of oil from the engine and top it off with auto trans fluid. Let the truck idle for 45 minutes or until quite , then change the oil and filter. I have made many lifters get quiet this way and it will not damage engine.

Ticking sound in my 2003 pontiac grand am when i start the car and ticks faster when i accelerate

Worn valve lifter, or the rocker arm needs to be tightened a little.
Have to remove valve covers to see if one is loose.
If it is the lifter, the whole top part of the engine has to be taken off to get at it.

1988 Cherokee ticking

I had this with my old yj engine take the valve cover off and use a hammer or rod to press down on the rocker arm while running to find the noisy lifter. Also use the wire method as someone else rec. Check the rod bearings also. Mine ended up being the wrist pin in the number 6 cylinder after taking down the trans and removing the head 2 times hope this helps.
