I have a 2012 elantra sedan. I put it into passing gear on the weekend and it produces a tremendous amount of smoke from the exhaust. I noticed on the internet that many other people have had the same...
this your fist car? never driving in this Winter conditions before?
what other cars do, or other peoples car do is not important.
what is important is your car, !
Guessing is for kids, no?
btw , any ASE certified mech can do this drunk, or blind folded,
You local dealer is where, USA< or where. ?
The real mech,, if you showed him said smoke, did you?
would know.!!
if you can not demonstrate a failure to a mech, he can not fix that.
he sees nothing. (can't fix it ,if it's not broke,.. law of universe)
Solutions. causes are easy, solutions not.
First off ,there 3 smoke types. (using DIY lingo no ASE)
1: black, that is wasted fuel.
2: white, (goes away fast, is steam) can be normal.
3: white, goes away very slow and sticks just like burning oil.
The real mech, first looks at that and can tell in 1 minute flat.
no jive !
All can. not just ASE, (unless born yesterday)
Black can be normal, only if CAT is dead.(2012 bad cat is not normal , but is on relics 1979 to about year 2000 is common)
if the CAT is not dead , then black seem. isa huge rich mixtures.
a stock car (fueling) in fact goes from 14.7:1 AFR to 12;1 AFR
AIR FUEL Ratio. and in fact goes tad rich and the CAT eats it for breakfast (turns it to carbon and heat) this happens Accelerating.
next:
all of this is ASE training Day 1 , instructions..... easy stuff.
1: white steam is normal. on all colds starts or all the time
in very cold weather, as , all otto cycle engines convert gasloline
to energy and as a by product, water (steam) under cold weather conditions this can be seen constantly.
If you take in a car to a dealer, and it smokes white, due to CLIMATE conditions, he will say, gee that is normal.
Gee look at that car, and that one over there, see, all with steam.
but if said steam happens all them time. and smells disgustingly sweet smeel, that is ANTIFREEZE burning, this is bad news.
(cracked head/block, bad gasket or worse)
2:white not steam (slow) is burned oil.
just like getting a frying pan too hot, it smokes, white.
sniff sniff, humm.. smells just like oil dripped on a hot exhaust manifold, (try that and learn that)
that is oil burning , on a 2012 that is a sad day.
and is under warranty , why not let them fix it for free.
caused by engine damage. (see huge list)
recap;: learn to diagnose this.
(steam is normal)
burning oil, is not.
burning Antifreeze glycol , never.
with these facts you can post back with a more accurate
symptoms.
