I think that your engine may have seized up. If the new thermostat was installed in the correct direction, I believe that the radiator was plugged up, which caused the engine to over heat. But it could also be that the impellers in the water pump have eroded away. I have never heard of a sensor that shuts off the engine during an over heat event. Excessive heat may have damaged the new thermostat.

It sounds like you have air in the system. Try having system bled and see if that changes anything. Also make sure that the fans are operational.

My check engine light is on, and today my temperature gauge stopped working and we have replaced the engine coolant sensor and the connector and temperature gauge still not working. PLEASE HELP

Could be the thermostat. I know nothing about cars but I noticed my 2000 Grand Prix temp gauge was not going to the normal level. My wife drives this car so I didn't notice it for a month or so. Eventually the Engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and the code came back as P0180... (1) low coolant (2) bad thermostat (3) enginge fuel temp sensor. They used a code reader that was about the size of an Ipod nano.

Coolant was okay, so took it to my mechanic. His netbook sized computer showed it was the Thermostat. He reset the codes and the temp guage went back to normal. Was short on $40 for the fix at the time, so I parked the car and promised to bring it back in 3 days. Went out and checked the car a day later at 25 degrees outside without starting the car... gauge still sitting at the normal level. No question it's the thermostat. That car will not be driven again until T.stat is fixed in 2 days.

Weird problem just started. Noticed the other day when I turned off the car, the fan continued to run for about another minute. Then, this morning, I was sitting in the car with it running and...

the first thing to try is turning the heater upto full heat(a/c off)if the temp guage goes down THEN CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT...(hot oil,if too hot, is thinner than the normal sae rating so the oil pressure will be lower.otherwise no real problem.

Engine stalls

Its not the thermostat. If it has a carburator Go to the fuel line and put 3 clothes pins on the fuel line. It will get rid of heat. I would love to know if it works out for you. Good luck!

The temperature gage is slow rising like it normally does.

Sounds to me like you have a bad thermostat. If you know how to change it you can give it a shot. If you dont know what I'm talking about, take your car in to a mechanic and tell em to have a look at your thermostat.
