There are _many_ reasons it can light up. The biggest financial mistake people make with cars is not finding out why it lit up. It could be something cheap to fix that will save you from blowing up your car... Or it could be something so expensive that you decide to sell the car _before_ it blows up and becomes worthless. Take it to a mechanic to tell you what is wrong. It is _worth_ the cost of finding out why it lit up.
many auto part stores and many national repair shops like midas will run the codes for you for free. start there. and it can be as simple as gas cap not fully on, to something a little harder like a bad oxygen sensor or something else. but free is a good starting point.
rdjagger is correct. However, (unfortunately) those type of places usually view unknowing customers as easy ''marks'' for unneeded repair work. Let them tell you what the code means, and do not agree to repairs without going to _several_ of those type of places; and don't tell the next one what the last one said. If they all agree, then you've been told the truth. (Ps... DO NOT believe you need brakes no matter how many tell you that. Go to a _dealer_ for an _honest_ brake job. Trust me on this).

Check
engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some
error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer
needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the
further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light
indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer
noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.

you know more about which areas to look, check, when there is engine light
coming up on dash panel.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon or small picture of an engine) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.
