Can replacement of the timing chains cause the pass lock fail? should I try to reset the pats? can hear the relay for the fuel pump clicking but the pump isnt running. Is it the PATS?

The wiring as in most was disentigrating so rewrapped. replaced tensioner n had to figure out timing (tech service bulletin says ignore timing marks on the cams - 30 degrees off!! found this after 2 months of trying to figure the timing out. got that set up right and have spark now but no fuel pressure. could it be the pats??

What year an make ford do you have ? Ford pats systems stop the vehicle engine from cranking - disables starter relay ! An if having a anti theft problem the theft light will flash fast ! Depending on the year you could have a fuel pump driver module !

Timing chain went out

I am curious as to what you removed to check the timing chain. If you removed a valve cover or peaked inside a breather hole to see the rockers, there are other reasons for a no start.

The DOHC double cam engine has timing problems due to "cam phasers". You can find internet articles about this problem.

If unsure about the no start cause, try checking for fuel pressure. A simple reset of the Inertia switch fixes many no start problems by restoring power to the fuel pump.

The dual cam timing chain requires a lot of work to service. If the problem is the "cam phasers" , there are cheater tools which save considerable time and money to switch using shortcuts.

You also may have a bad fuel pump relay if you find the Inertia switch is not the problem and you can not hear the fuelpump run.

Have a 1999 ford explorer sport 4x4, cranks want start. have replaced fuel pump, crank senser and cam senser, checked fuzes, replaced computer. doesnt seem to be firing

When you turn the key on you should beable to hear the fuel pump come on. Other than that you have a fuel pressure test port, looks just like a tire valve stem get a little probe press the valve after cranking fuel should come out strongly and not dribble out. If is doesnt seem to be firing your going to have check the coil pack for spark from the coil pack take one plug wire out and put it in a position that as you crank the vehicle you will be able to see spark jump or even hear give it a 1/4 air gap from its connection. If you dont have spark and your timing chain isnt broken you need to check for power the choice of tool is a test light.or volt meter. If you dont have either test tool we will go by sound when you turn the key on the engine fuse box has relays do you hear them click. That click noise will be fuel pump relay and PCM relay for power inpect those relays for corrode connections you mainly have a power problem and inspect for proper ground a missing ground can also cause the ECM to not fire the coils2_26_2012_7_32_43_am.gif

My Montro cranks but will not start

there could many different problems. do you have any check engine codes? if so have them checked out, because a sensor may have failed causing the engine not to start. then you need to check the fuel pump. stand by the fuel tank and have someone turn the key on, but dont start the car. listen very closely you should hear a small electric motor run for about 5 sec. if you dont hear anything, check the fuse and the relay. when you turn the key on the relay should make a fairly loud click. if no sound is heard the relay needs to be replaced. if you still dont hear the motor your fuel pump has failed.

Was driving my car and it felt like it was running out of gas with a full tank of gas. then stalled. cranks faster then normal. changed the plugs and noticed no fuel pump initiallize on key turning. is...

If your engine cranks "faster thAn normal," that is an indication that it has lost compression. That probably means that suddenly, the valve timing is wrong, since some valves are open when they should be closed, on compression strokes. Most likely, you have a defective timing belt, or timing chain. Since chains very seldom fail that way, (but it actually can happen), my bet is, the problem is a failed timing belt. Even if you can see action in the valves by looking through the cap where you add oil, that does NOT mean that that the timing belt is not bad, since many times, they fail by losing some ribs on the belt instead of breaking completely apart (which would stop all valve action)!

2005 3500 duramax, drawing down batteries in about 6 days, took off ground cables and is a small arc. When touching cable to battery can hear the fuel pump on frame pump up with key off. Any suggestions?

its recieving power all the time so my first suspicion would be to pull the fuel pump relay and see if it stops ,as the contacts inside the fuel pump could be burnt together causing it to run all the time .

Fuel pump on 2004 pontiac grand am does not come on when car starts...checked fuses in engine compartment...turns over but doesn't fire...is this fuel pump?

Well i would change the fuel filter first. Then if that doesn't fix it there might be a reset button on the inside of the trunk for the fuel pump actually look for the reset button first. If you don't have one there is a relay switch under the hood sometimes they fail. You have three Ac,Fuel pump, door locks. The way i do it is turn the key on have some one put there hands and feel for the switch to work when you engage the power locks mark it with white tire crayon and feel for the ac when you turn it on it will still click even with the engine not running. mark that one also, Now the last one has to be the fuel pump relay turn the key on and it should click. if no click is heard? You have a bad fuel relay switch. replace it. If you feel the click and hear it? That would mean the fuel pump is bad. And these are in the tank. But please go with the easy stuff first. it might seam a waste of time checking the relays and marking them but i always fo this and mark them. cause you never know when your gonna need to find the relay something.
Good luck!
Hope i helped.

How are you diagnosing it looses spark ?
Could be an issue with the Fuel Pump relay or the PATS system

If you get a crank no start, turn the key to the off position. Make sure you can hear the fuel pump run ( in the fuel tank, by the fuel door on the box ) by rolling down the window. Turn the key from off to run and wait to hear the fuel pump cycle. At the same time the theft light in the cluster should go out. Do both of those happen correctly ?

Try swapping the Trailer Tow adapter Reverse relay with the fuel pump relay.
My '01 had cases of crank no start, which I attributed to not holding the speed pass away from the key correctly ( causing PATS to not be completed ) , and at ~ 34K miles the fuel pump relay went out.

1996 Nissan Altima crank-no start. Didn't hear the fuel pump, changed it. Still don't hear the fuel pump, still crank-no start. Float in gas tank has power, gauge reads correct. Is the relay for the...

There is a disconnect for the fuel line in the engine compartment. Disconnect it at the motor and cycle the key. This will determine if your fuel pump is running. If it is not which I would assume it isnt then check the relay. If the relay is not clicking when you cycle the key then replace it. If you have low pressure then try replacing the fuel filter. This could cause low pressure and keep the vehicle from starting. If it is not fuel delivery then there is a problem with your timing or firing order.

At least once a week my daughters 01 150 cranks but refuses to start. by the time i go to pick her up it starts

When the crank no start happens, is the theft light blinking ? If you turn the key from the off to run position ( do not start ) does the theft light on the cluster go out ?

If not, check the key ring for other RFID fobs ( Mobil speed pass, etc ). If they are too close to the ign switch, this can mess up the RFID of the programmed key for PATS ( Passive AntiTheft System ).

If the theft light goes out, it could be a problem with the fuel pump relay. You can swap this with the trailer tow battery charge relay to test. My 2001 SuperCrew had the fuel pump relay go out at ~ 30K miles ( think that was it, it was low ).

If the relay change with the battery charge relay does not change things, is this happening with a specific fuel level ( i.e. 1/4 or 1/8 th of a tank ) ? Could be something floating in the tank that is getting pulled to the fuel pickup, blocking the fuel to the fuel pump.

The other thing , it could be the fuel pump itself, but start with the PATS check, and the fuel pump relay.
