Is the same PCM? Did it come out of a vehicle with a 3 speed tranny or 4 speed tranny? Is your vehicle a 3 or 4 speed? Will make a difference if programmed for a different tranny

There isn't a code P01871 , nor P1871 . DTC - P1870
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the difference between engine speed and transmission output speed. In D3 drive range with the TCC engaged, the engine speed should closely match the transmission output speed. In D4 drive range, with the TCC engaged, the TCC slip speed should be -20 to +50 RPM.
When the PCM detects excessive TCC slip when the TCC should be engaged, then DTC P1870 sets. DTC P1870 is a type B DTC.


Your best bet ,take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.
Bronze material found in the transmission oil pan may indicate stator shaft bushing wear. If bushing wear is suspected, inspect the stator shaft and the input, turbine, shaft for damage.

Ok one major question! Will changing the tcc solenoid in my 01 cougar fix the o/d flashing and make the car go forward when I try to drive it?


No. replacing the TCC or the OSS, will not make the transmission work. You can unplug these transmissions and they will still work, less OD. Sounds like you may have stripped the torque converter oil pump gear. Common in these older Mercury/Fords.

The transmission internal mode switch (IMS) is a sliding contact switch attached to the selector detent inside the transmission side cover. The four inputs to the PCM indicate the position of the transmission range selector. The input voltage level at the PCM is high (B+) when the IMS is open and low when the switch is closed to ground. The four input parameters represented are Signals A, B, C and P (Parity). Refer to Transmission Internal Mode Switch Logic

Install a Scan Tool . A professional scan tool !
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Important: Before clearing the DTC, use the Scan Tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records. Using the Clear Info function erases the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the PCM.
Record the DTC Freeze Frame and Failure Records.
Clear the DTC.
Select IMS on the Scan Tool .
Place the gear select lever in PARK range, then move to NEUTRAL range.
Does each range selected match the Scan Tool IMS display?
.Replace the lever assembly-manual shaft detent with internal mode switch.
Refer to Transmission Overhaul in the 4T65-E Section of the Transmission Unit Repair Manual.

No , it is all electronic ! Do you have a shifting problem ? erratic shifting etc.. ?
The automatic transmission input shaft speed sensor (AT ISS) is a magnetic inductive pickup that relays information about the transmission input speed to the PCM. The PCM uses this information to control the line pressure, TCC apply and release, and the transmission shift patterns.

DTC P0894 Transmission Component Slipping
DTC P0894Circuit Description with 4L80-E / 4L85-E Automatic Transmission The powertrain control module monitors the engine speed and the transmission output shaft speed. The PCM calculates turbine shaft speed and torque converter clutch (TCC) slip speed by using inputs from the automatic transmission input shaft speed sensor, automatic transmission output shaft speed sensor, and other transmission components. The forward clutch housing is used as the AT ISS rotor. Whenever the TCC is engaged, engine speed and turbine speed will closely match, indicating low TCC slip speed. In D3, with the TCC engaged, calculated transmission component slip can only occur in the torque converter. In D4 OVERDRIVE, with the TCC engaged, transmission component slip can occur in the TCC or the fourth clutch assembly. If the PCM detects an excessive TCC slip speed in D4 OVERDRIVE, when the TCC should be engaged, then DTC P0894 sets. DTC P0894 is a type C DTC. The PCM stores this information as Freeze Frame, California only, and Failure Records, California and Federal. The PCM stores the DTC P0894 in PCM history during the second consecutive trip, California, or the first trip, Federal, in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. For California emissions, the PCM turns OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test runs and passes. A scan tool can clear the MIL/DTC. For California emissions, the PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without an emission related diagnostic fault occurring. For Federal emissions, the PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a non-emission related diagnostic fault occurring. The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the ignition switch is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM. A TFP manual valve position switch malfunction can set DTC P0894. A mechanical failure of the shift solenoids or TCC PWM solenoid valve can set DTC P0894. Internal transmission failures can result in a DTC P0894. Sticking or contaminated shift valves may cause intermittent slipping in D4. DTC P0894 defaults to an elevated line pressure condition which may result in partial TCC apply. This may produce an idle surge that could stall the engine. What are the two plugs on a transmission


One plug near the dipstick tube is for the PCM to control the shift solenoids and pressure switch and such in the transmission.
The plug near the drive shaft in the output shaft housing is for the speedo.

it indicates an insufficient output from the OSS sensor.The output shaft speed (OSS) sensor is a magnetic pickup that provides transmission output shaft rotation speed information to the powertrain control module (PCM).
I suspect RFI, affecting the OSS signal to the CPM. I will post the actual PCM rationality test, it will help you understand what the PCM looks for before setting the code.Possible sources of strong RFI are the alternator, Battery cables corroded, fuel pump faulty, and any other wire running next to the returning wiring harness, the return signal from the OSS signal is tied to your transmission solenoid, TSS, and a few other electrical systems, any of them will send an unwanted voltage that can interfere with the signal.

the flashing O/D light usually means you have a bad speed sensor that sends speed info to the engine & trans computer.

Vehicle Speed Sensor The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (Figure 42) is a variable reluctance or Hall-effect sensor that generates a waveform with a frequency that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle is moving at a relatively low velocity, the sensor produces a signal with a low frequency. As the vehicle velocity increases, the sensor generates a signal with a higher frequency. The PCM uses the frequency signal generated by the VSS (and other inputs) to control such parameters as fuel injection, ignition control, transmission/transaxle shift scheduling and torque converter clutch scheduling.

Transmission Control Switch (TCS) and Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL)
The transmission control switch (TCS) is a momentary contact switch. When the switch is pressed, a signal is sent to the powertrain control module (PCM) to allow automatic shifts from first through fourth gears or first through third gears only. The PCM energizes the transmission control indicator lamp (TCIL) when the switch is off.

The TCIL indicates overdrive cancel mode activated (lamp on) and electronic pressure control (EPC) circuit shorted (lamp flashing) or monitored sensor failure.

Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor
The output shaft speed (OSS) sensor is a magnetic pickup, located at the output shaft ring gear, that sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) to indicate transmission output shaft speed. The OSS is used for torque converter clutch control, shift scheduling and to determine electronic pressure control.
