Why is my 2000 kia sportage 4x4 getting such a high tach reading2700 or higherwhen i drive 50 mph or faster with it in 5th gear?

Shifts great, 1st through 5th. But shows a higher then normal tach reading in 5th gear

This is really sad because I have owned 4 KIA vehicles and it used to be that KIA let you get ALL the info the mechanics use on their website for free. Now Snap-on has partnered with them and they charge for it. IT is not cheap either. www.kiatechinfo.com You could use the cheapest rate and download EVERYTHING on that car. This could something as simple as a sticking valve or it could be much worse.

Try wiggling the connections on computer
Probably getting a bad connections
Or possibly could be tranny slipping or clutch
Out of adjustment

Are you sure you are counting the gears right? Sound like Torque converter lockup is not working.

If an automatic try driving on a good long stretch of road in fifth gear and hold the speed steady while touching the brake with your left foot and see if the tach rises. Touching the brake unlocks the lockup converter and should show an increase of around 400-500 rpm. If it does not increase it may be that the converter is not locking up or the brake light switch may be sticking keeping it from locking.

I have a 97 kia sportage with 160,000.miles ,stick shift, ......when shifting from 4th to 5th its hard to get into 5th and ill put in 3rd my mistake...is this a ezay fix ?

Sounds like ther is a selector problem in the gear box. Take off the top, where the gear lever goes in and have a look. if there is anything wrong there the box will have to come out.

Should I keep overdrive on or off? also should keep ECT on or off?

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. I am Toyota Ed, and I will be assisting you today.

The Overdrive function allows the transmission to shift an extra time, sort of like selecting 5th gear in a 5 speed manual transmission. The Overdrive, when used, will save you gas, as the engine is no longer maintaining a high RPM at normal driving speed. Look at the tach whilst driving about 45 mph, and engage/disengage the OD. You will see the tach RPM raise when the OD is off.
More RPM = lower fuel mileage,

The ECT is a different circumstance. The ECT button is used primarily when you have a heavy load in the car, or are towing something. All the ECT button does, when it is engaged, is lengthen the shift points as the transmission upshifts. Normally, the transaxle will shift into 2nd gear at 18-21 mph. When the ECT is engaged, the transaxle will shift in the area of 22 -24 mph. In short, the ECT just makes the time to the 1-2 and the 2-3 upshift longer, to compensate for the additional load being carried/towed.

I hope my assistance answers your question.

Thanks for choosing FixYa today!

I have a 2000 kia sportage 4x4, no check engine light and it will not shift into 3rd gear.please help

if its a automatic and the engine is cold it wont shift into the last gear. the tranny and engine have to be at close to normal running temp to shift. its normal and nothing to freak over. if this isn't the case go to kia-forums.com/1g-1994-2002-sportage/ and post a thread there or look for one. great site

I just replaced all the belts on my 2000 Kia

The last shift is not a real gear shift, it is called "torque converter". The high rpms happens because the transm. goes to neutral. Get it to a transm. shop to be tested

Transmission going bad?

popping out of gear means your shifting forks need adjustment, same as the grinding. the tranny is probably good, just the top part, the shifting mechanism needs to be repaired, so it would be cheaper to repair than rebuilding the whole transmision.still, im guessing about 300-500$ depending where you live.
