You need to find the engine temp sensor. It should be in the cooling system. Check your wiring diagram if you have one. Disconnect the wire from the temp sensor and turn the key to the on position. Now touch the wire to a good ground and note what happens to the gauge. If it goes all the way up or down the sensor needs to be changed. If nothing happens you need to check that the wire going from the sensor back to the gauge is good, you can disconnect the wire at the gauge and check by connecting both ends to an ohm meeter or use a test light. If this wire is goo now you need to check for power on the other side of the gauge. If no power that is the problem. If you have power the gauge is no good. That is it. I hope this helps.

Engine overheating warning light comes on in traffic and temperature guage needle pegs, has happened in 30 degree and 80 degree weather, isn' there a fan that is supposed to kick in and if so does it run...

You are correct.
There is an electric fan that activates via a temperature sensor. And this all is protected by a fuse.
Check the fuse panel it may be simply replacing the fuse will resolve the problem. If the fuse blows again have it checked for a short. Temperature sensor could also be bad and need replacing.
Hope this helps!

Fuel guage & water guage are not working properly the fuel guage reads ful then will go to empty after you drive it for awile - the water guage only goes up to a quater

The gas tank sending unit has a float on it to register the amount of gas in the tank. The float is probably faulty which will cause erratic readings and is a fairly common issue with some GM units. Replacement of the sending unit should resolve that issue. As far as the coolant temperature gauge, it could be a faulty temperature sending unit or a thermostat that is stuck open or someone removed the thermostat. This will cause the engine to never reach operating temperature which in turn makes the engine run rich and can clog cat. converters and destroy some sensors.

MY VW CITI CHICO 2001 1.4i temperature guage faulty?

good chance you t-stat is stuck open that will cause the temp gauge to not get all the way to normal operating temp. also e.c.t can cause this problem. good luck hope that helps. to bridge your connector it will not really tell you to much if you take a multi meter and check the green wire and put the other wire to ground you can see the signal voltage less then 6v

My temperature gauge warning light is coming on periodically...oil level is fine. What should the temperature be at? Is it possibly a sensor problem?

The temperature guage measures the coolant temperature, not the oil temperature -- the normal range is indicated on the guage.

Check your coolant.

If the temperature guage is not working and engine light is on sh

Not really because the thermostat may be fine and the light will still be ON. If the guage is NOT working it will trigger check engine light. First you should fix guage, it probably needs a temperature sensor or sensor wire may be broken. Check it out, good luck.
