the ports on an R134a AC system are different sizes to prevent trying to charge from the wrong side. If your coupling doesn't fit on the port snugly, you may have misidentified which port is which. If it does fit and simply won't engage, then you should clean the port, check the coupling for debris, and make certain that you are applying pressure evenly as you connect it. Any misalignment / uneven pressure, will prevent the coupling from engaging. You may also need to manually engage the retaining ring due to manufacturing variances.
The low pressure side port is located somewhere on the 'thicker' plumbing vs. the 'thinner' plumbing coming off of the compressor.
The pressure should be 25psi to 45 psi when the compressor is running.
You can't connect the low pressure hose with a can of r134a on the wrong side (high side vs. low side) because the ports are a different diameter (size).
It may be on the accumulator as well, the canister looking part of the a/c plumbing.
