I have a code 26 on a 1992 Buick Regal. While driving the cel turns on at 2000 rpm and turns off at 900 rpm. Also the cel turns off while parked and engaged in drive. Please advise as to the most likely cause.Thanks.
The easiest route would be to replace the pcm with a used one. The quad driver circuits are inside the unit. Somebody trained at computer repair could do it, no problem. But just buy a used one for a few bucks, transfer your mem-cal packet (memory and calibration) into it, install it and you are ready to go again.
Before you take out your old one from under the dash passenger side, be sure and take off the negative battery cable from the battery. Never unplug or plug in any connections to the pcm when the battery is on line. Damage may result.
Testimonial: "Thanks for your input. My research tells me not to replace the computer until the short circuit is located or I will have the same problem.Seldom on a code 26 is the computer at fault.I'm having it scanned at an auto-electric shop to pinpoint the malfunction location by multimetre. Thanks again."

A quad driver is what turns the fuel injector on and off. They're part of the PCM and are not replaceable separately. You have to buy a rebuild PCM. BUT, do not do that until you find out WHY the quad drivers went bad. Usually it's caused by a short in the fuel injector coil windings or a short in the harness. If you don't fix it and just replace the PCM, you'll burn out the new PCM
How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? To check codes, yourself, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader. Some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free, if there are any.
Code 26 is for a problem with one of the quad drivers inside the engine computer, or the wiring harness, and code 42 is for a problem with the ignition module or the control.
You'll need a shop manual with the testing procedures for each code to proceed.
Sorry, only the dealer can clear the code in your radio if you don't know it. This is an anti-theft feature. If the code were out there radios would stolen!
