Hello, This is a quick sloppy video of how to replace, re-install, and fix a clunky shifter. This works for 2003 ...

It stands for "Manual". It allows you to shift gears manually, without a clutch, for those performance oriented drivers. You can also use it to stay in low gear for climbing steep hills or driving in snow. Once you shift into "M" by moving the stick to the left of the "D" position, you should see a number "1" just above the "M", letting you know you're in first gear. Pushing the stick forward or backward shifts gears.
in most vehicles they use a steel wire to connect the turning of the key-ignition with the shifting lever. if this cable is broken or out of adjustment, it could cause a problem like that. just an idea.
There is a rubber bushing that sits inside the shift linkage that wears out over time. It will not damage the trans if you drive it that way. It is just a little noisy and sounds bad when moving the shift lever.
-First check fluid while the car is running at temperature (hot). In Park position. and at good level. If not full at indicator add more fluid and find out next. Still have same problem....? Let us know.
I had the same noise on my wife`s 03 cts. It was the the rubber bushing on the shifting arm from the shift lever to the trans. The arm was 250.00 plus I installed myself. Very easy to get to. Bad design should not have went bad.
the clutch is the cheapest option and clutch fluid or cable is the first point to check indicates that the clutch is not properly disengaging with the foot on the pedal and that is loading up the gears making shifting difficult or impossible
