I have an '88 trooper. Usually it drives fine, but every once in a while I will be driving and it will start sputtering, then it will lose all power and die. When I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a bit it will drive fine for a few minutes, then sputter and die. If I wait longer, it seems to drive fine for a few weeks before doing it again. Though last night it did it again. After waiting 2 hours, it started fine and I drove it for about 5 minutes before it did it again.
When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.
Testimonial: "So I was able to get it started and run it for a while to see if it died. I realize that my car will run fine for a while, then it will start sputtering. BUT, before it dies, I can keep it going if I give it gas, BUT in this phase, it sounds bad. You can hear the "badness" coming out of the exhaust... almost like it's running on less than all its cylinders. It does that for a minute or so, then dies."
