My car is sputtering and dying. If I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a while an hour or so it will start up and drive fine.

I have an '88 trooper. Usually it drives fine, but every once in a while I will be driving and it will start sputtering, then it will lose all power and die. When I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a bit it will drive fine for a few minutes, then sputter and die. If I wait longer, it seems to drive fine for a few weeks before doing it again. Though last night it did it again. After waiting 2 hours, it started fine and I drove it for about 5 minutes before it did it again.

So I was able to get it started and run it for a while to see if it died. I realize that my car will run fine for a while, then it will start sputtering. BUT, before it dies, I can keep it going if I give it gas, BUT in this phase, it sounds bad. You can hear the "badness" coming out of the exhaust... almost like it's running on less than all its cylinders. It does that for a minute or so, then dies.

When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.

What would cause a 2014 ford fusion from starting after it had been driven for 30 minutes of city driving, some highway, and had a stop at the train tracks to wait on a train going by?

Sputtering is usually a sign of having a fuel issue. You need to hook a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and confirm that you have at least 40# of pressure at the rail.

Engine cranks fine, but will only run 5-6 sec then dies. If you press the gas, it sputters and dies immediately.

Seems like a fuel delivery problem.
May be a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter or a fuel line problem.

What car make/model? What engine?

When it dies, try to turn ignition off immediately, wait a couple of seconds and turn the key quickly to the crank position (don't wait with the key in ignition-on position so that the fuel pump doesn't try to pump fuel into the fuel lines).
If it hesitates to start or runs significantly shorter before dying, you have pinpointed a problem with the fuel system.

Pls let me know what you find out.

Engine sputtering idle

Possibly a leaky injector bleeding down the fuel pressure. First check fuel pressure at shutoff, start, and then when it's smooth. If it changes a lot, you would have to raise the fuel rail and power on the pump to see what is happening.

93 ford thunderbird turns over starts but then dies immediately as if out of gas

possible failed fuel pump from running dry in the tank. The plastic gears are very fine and without fuel to lubricate them they fail on a regular basis To rely on a low fuel light is asking for trouble from a number of sources in the car.
