My 1995 jeep grand cherokee's speedometer only works sometimes. What is, or what could be the problem?

  • Anonymous Sep 08, 2015

try your speed sensor in your transfer case mine did this a while back and it was because the transfer case was low on transmission fluid and or going bad so i replaced my sensor and topped off the fluids in the case and its been fine. its simple to fix as well just 1 bolt and 1 plug and its out.

Do not read posts of persons guessing, (using wrong books and years) my answer now is 1995 WJ, USA version not export.
so.... The below is USA WJ facts, not guess, not generalities.
but is the odometer working.????????????
did you:
check fuses first? (has 2) my guess they are good, as other parts work.in the VIC.
did you scan it yet? (or do the flash codes , diagnostic)

how it works is covered in the FSM, read how in the book.
the book is free. JEEP WJ
chapter 8e
page 11 on. and in wiring.
http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service

to diagnose something or fix it takes knowing how it works.
guessing is folly here.
the speedo on this car works off the CCD network,
in said car. (all 100% computer tech)

and the VIC self tests. run those yet>? its easy just read that same 8E chapter. and see flow chart there, for VIC.
Vehicle Info center.... VIC>

there is no speedo cable, its not some 1988 cherokee from AMC.
sorry !

see the photo below, note NO CABLES on GC. to the VIC,.
so does the odometer works
if you scan the PCM does the PCM DUMPS out VSS errors.!@!!
its all 100% computers and sensors now. 1993 up.
GC was early in this era, for that.fact.

The PCM sees SPEED< and then sends DATA to the VIC
via the CCD network, so if DATA is missing?, both the speed and miles fail(odometer)
easy huh? the below has computer, and talks on this network.
scan the pcm. first, (after fuses)
there is other issues here, the VIC is married to the PCM.
(due to odometer laws here in USA) so that can be a pain, on all cars. made here.

Below is VIC rear. the center conn. is power and DATA.

My 1995 jeep grand cherokee's speedometer only wor - 25722215-50dtgs4ogurzwlsfgjpff5yl-2-0.jpg
this is the VIC schematic, all information is transmitted with DATA.
25722215-50dtgs4ogurzwlsfgjpff5yl-2-1.jpg the VIC has a computer inside, a micro processor.
and a network chip. c1 and c2 twisted pair, Called CCD.

it works not unlike your PC computer monitor, see?
data in, >process ?>data to gauges. and lamps.

If it is electronic might be an intermittent fault with the electronic circuitry. If it is mechanically driven it could be the clock itself, the drive cable from the transmission or the drive mechanism itself.
Should be easy enough to sort.
Good Luck

SOURCE: engine code 95 jeep grand cherokee lerado

12 is a battery disconnect within the last 50 start cycles and 55 means the end of the diagnostic cycle.  Basically the computer found nothing wrong. The 12 code may seem incorrect if you haven't disconnected the battery recently, but from my experience the 12 code shows up almost all the time regardless.

The vehicle speed sensor and speedometer are one in the same on this model I believe. If one goes out it takes the other with it if its all electronic and not cable driven.

Speedometer is not working properly it only goes up to 20mph

You can try replacing the speed sensor that is mounted on the tail end of the transmission housing.
This issue seems to be the reason for your speedometer problem.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee speedometer flickers when its raining and the windshield wipers are on also high idle sometimes when its hot.. any ideas?

Sounds like the speedometer cable under the steering inside the column could be loose. Minor adjustment if you know someone that could do this for you, or take it to a mechanic.

The speedometer on my 2002 Grand Cherokee Jeep stop working?

I believe your speedometer works off of a sensor either in the wheal or transmission, check this first then check your speedometer, sometimes they go bad and you have to replace the entire dash.
