I haven\t't had any problems with my car starting until today. It was really hot and humid out I checked battery cables didnt seem loose. After turning the key a coupld of times it turns over very groggy at first and then a puff of smoke comes out and it starts. Is this sign that starter is going out or is it something else?
What color is the smoke? Starters don't emit smoke out of the exhaust. If it is white smoke then that is steam and you have a blown head gasket
Yes, it could be the starter. It also could be the battery. I've replaced the battery three times in my 20 year old car, but the original starter is still fine. I'd have the battery checked before I replace the starter.
In another car, I had symptoms like bad starter, but in that car, the starter was really expensive, and on a hunch, I had the charging system tested. The "new" battery was defective, saving me hundreds when I didn't need to replace the starter.
