Yes, the open circuit can indeed cause your loss of power and the appearance of running rich.

Likely caused by replacing the exhaust manifold. Check wires to injectors.

    also should say that it idles good but sometimes i can hear the miss and have seen the black smoke but when i drive it it really bogs down,could the injector tjhing also cause this ??

  • Jay Plesset May 22, 2015

    Yes, open circuit on those injectors means that those cylinders aren't firing. That's causing the lack of power.

Lacks power in highway hills

Hi,

I am assuming that you have no issues with the engine whatsoever, then the only possible areas to check would be:
1. axle gear ratio - to my knowledge a Wrangler would be 4.11 while some Cherokees could be anywhere from 3.54-4.88;
2. flywheel - a lighter flywheel could cause the engine to loose easily its momentum hence difficulty on an a rise.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hard to start keeps cranking then fires over and engine flutters but still doesnt start till 2 more times then when you take off you give it gas and it bougs down and no power pops then after it warms up...

check for codes, if none then check fuel pressure and volume with a gage. pressure should be in the area of 35lbs unless this is throttle body which is about 15/18lbs pressure, if this is a vortec motor the pressure is 55lbs. the volume should be about 1 liter in 15 seconds. the vortec injection systems have a problem with the spider fuel lines that go to each injector cracking/breaking causing no fuel supply and leaking into the intake manifold and not going into the cylinders.

What causes engine to accelerate without gas?

Possibilities:
  1. Leak in intake manifold or deteriorated throttle body gasket;
  2. Loose or missing throttle body spring;
  3. Defective idle air bypass valve;
  4. Bad throttle position sensor;
  5. Bad EGR valve or EGR position sensor;
  6. Evil aliens.
If there is, or has recently been, a CHECK ENGINE light showing, have the stored codes read out. They may reveal the culprit or, at least, indicate where to begin looking.

Hi there,

You definately have a transmission problem.

When was the last time the transmission fluid was completely replaced? Trans fluid is CRITICAL for proper shifting operation. The measuring of trans fluid is also critical and must be measured in a certain way (engine warm, selector moved through all gears, then finally left in N, while checking for hot level).

Your trans also has a fail-safe function - when a fault is detected, the trans will go into "LIMP" mode. This still allows driving, but will usually remain in 3rd gear. In this instance, the "N" (Neutral) light on your dash may also flash.

If you are technically inclined, I can provide your with instructions on how to check your trans computer for fault codes...

Let me know...

I have a 2004 jeep grand Cherokee, I have 1st gear manually from a complete stop,same with 2nd. But when I put it in drive, the engine revs at 3500 rpm, but I only travel 5-7 mph. Tcm trouble code p0700...

sounds like low transmission fluid, a dirty filter or both, to check the fluid level, open the hood leave the engine running put the transmission in neutral with the parking break on then pull out the dip-stick labled trans, wipe it off with a rag plug it back in then pull it our and look at the level. To see if there is a dirty filter look at the fluid if it is darkbrown or black and it smells burnt then you need to get your transmission flushed and the filter changed.

Jeep runs for about 5 miles then dies upon acceleration. I've changed the fuel filter - didn't help.

I don't know which engine you have so these are generic answers.
It could be a plugged catalytic converter or muffler. Try disconnecting the exhaust from the manifold, be sure to fasten it up so it won't hit the ground or you'll end up with your exhaust wrapped around your rear axle (these stainless exhaust pipes are expense to replace). Take it for a drive and see if it helps, don't drive it too much this way or you'll ruin your valves. It might run rough with the exhaust disconnected.
It might be the fuel pump, on most Jeeps these are expense in tank pumps, it's best to check it before replacing it. There is also a fuel filter built into the fuel pump (not sure if it can be change separately) that could be causing trouble. Check by inserting an in line fuel pressure gauge or have it checked.
It could be electronic, if you don't have a code reader, you can try this trick but I don't know if it will work on your model. With out starting the engine turn the key on,off,on,off,on,off,on within 10 seconds. If you have a digital odometer it will give you the codes here, it will start with 12 and end with 55. 12 - engine not running, 55 - finished. If you don't have a digital odometer the check engine light will start flashing to give you the codes, flash - 1, flash -1, flash - 1, flash-flash -2, flash-flash -2, flash-flash -2, is 12 and so on until it's done and flashes a 55 code. If you get any codes you can contact by replying to this message, I'll try to help you from there.

Transmission slipping. does not appear to be shifting properly. replaced ecm. got tcm from jeep grand cherokee same engine (4.7L). notice significant burning/smoke after driving exhaust manifold. not...

U are going to need to overhaul the transmission here, the smoke is the trans overheating from excessive slippage i suspect.code for wrong gear ratio's mean the input and output shaft speed are out of symc for the gear the trans is in, the 3rd or 4th gear is the usual codes, this sometimes is caused by defective speed sensors but most times the trans is slipping and the TCM detects that and sets a code
