SOURCE: red hot catalytic converter, motor shaking, and no codes.

well you could have had a cat converter go bad before thats possible, either you now have a piece of the old broken cat stuck in the exhuast pipe,or you have what i think is a bad ignition module/coil pack and spark plugs causing a major misfire causing it to over heat and have no power,,,or its out of timing causing the same issue,,its odd it has no codes,no ses light,if its a bad coil its got a ses,,these are just a few ideas its too hard to tell without seeing the car

you can do it yourself it will only cost the price of the catalytic converters, first i would disconnect them and visually inspect them if you see that they look like a honey comb with no obstruction of the holes than they are fine but if you see black residue or even some melting of the material than i would replace them. hope this helps you.

SOURCE: replace a catalytic converter for a 1999 dodge stratus

The cat is located just off of the exhaust manifold. You have to remove things to get out of the way. Loosen down pipe to converter and unclamp the converter and it should pull right out. Use a good penetrating oil to help loosen the down pipe bolts.

Kia carnival 2006 PO420 code

The PO420 code is a generic code indicating a problem with the catalytic converter system efficiency below threshold. This issue can be caused by several factors, including:
  1. A clogged or failing catalytic converter
  2. An exhaust leak before the catalytic converter
  3. A malfunctioning oxygen sensor
  4. Fuel system issues, such as a clogged fuel injector
  5. Engine misfire
  6. A damaged or failing ignition system
  7. A vacuum leak
Here are the steps you can take to diagnose and fix the issue:
  1. Check the catalytic converter: If the converter is clogged, it may need to be replaced.
  2. Examine the exhaust system for leaks: Leaks before the catalytic converter can reduce its efficiency. If a leak is found, it should be repaired.
  3. Replace the oxygen sensor: If the oxygen sensor is malfunctioning, it can cause the engine to run too rich or too lean, which can affect the catalytic converter.
  4. Check the fuel system: Clogged fuel injectors can cause a lean fuel mixture, which can harm the catalytic converter. Have the fuel system checked and cleaned as necessary.
  5. Repair any engine misfires: An engine misfire can damage the catalytic converter over time. Fix the misfire and see if the code returns.
  6. Check the ignition system: A faulty ignition system can cause a misfire and damage the catalytic converter. Have the ignition system checked and repaired as needed.
  7. Find and fix any vacuum leaks: Vacuum leaks can cause a lean fuel mixture and damage the catalytic converter.
It's best to have a mechanic diagnose the problem and perform the necessary repairs, as some of these repairs can be complicated and require specialized tools.

Kia Sedona bank 2 catalyst converter

My best suggestion is to see if local wrecking yard has a catalytic converter (preferably a pair, 1 for each bank) from a newer wrecked Kia Sedona or similar vehicle. According to my manuals that cover Sephia/Spectra, the catalytic converters are connected to the exhaust system with bolts, and in some applications, springs and bolts. The Chilton/Haynes repair manual, which I was referencing, has step by step instructions in doing this repair. The best investment you can make is a Chiltons/Haynes repair manual that covers your make/model/year of vehicle. I do find it odd that the cat converter went bad on one side only, and on what would be considered a newer vehicle. I'm running the original cat converters in GM and Kia vehicles, and the newest one is 2002.

2001 kia sephia is backfiring and has a hard time accelerating. it also sounds like it is going to stall out. and it actually stalled out one time.

Check the coil packs, I bet one is bad. You have two above the spark plugs, each feeds two cylinders. Easy and fairly cheap fix. I have 125k on a 2000 Sephia and have replaced the right side twice, while still on the factory left.

The only fault code on 2001 kia sephia is P0422, catylist threshold low.... car ran for 2 weeks fine after new fuel pump, and then just died like first time.... 126 thousnd miles and plenty of fuel, fuel...

P0422 - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem
