How to fix a knocker sensor on a 1996 Mercury villager

The "knock sensor" works like a microphone, and is a part that seldom goes bad. They do, rarely, and can be purchased at your local auto parts store.
Please state the SYMPTOMS that make you think you need to replace it. (If a computer diagnostic code indicated "knock sensor," it means your engine was pinging due to low fuel octane, misfiring, or over-advanced timing).

1999 Villager: my 1999 mercury villager wont start,it turns over ...

Probably a bad distributor. The cam sensor and optical sensor are under the slotted wheel and when the bearing goes, it gets brown dust on the optical sensor. Temp fix is to clean the optical sensor, but you will need a reman distributor, $200 on ebay. 1999 was famous for this issue.

1996 mercury villager transmission won't go in reverse

You can have a shop diagnose the problem by checking for a computer code that should tell them about the conditon of the sensor or solenoid. You shouldn't have to start over with a new trans, but get referrals to a good shop first. Always check your fluid levels first, make sure they are what they should be and that the fluid looks good and red, not dark and dirty. Sometimes it's the easy stuff that gets overlooked.
