There is a grinding noise from the front of the vehicle while driving. All new brakes. The wheel bearings have been checked and are fine.

While on a lift the car was put into gear. The grinding noise can only be heard inside the vehicle but not while standing outside it and only happens when car is in drive. Help!

Is it more like a vibration and humming, than grinding noise? If so it would be a bad engine or transmission mount. To check bearings while driving.. Find an empty parking lot, Make right and left turns/circles. Making a left, if the noise get loader, the right side bearing is bad. and vice versa. Do around 10 MPH while turning circles.

Testimonial: "No humming or vibration unless I'm on the highway. The noises doesn't change whether I turn left or right. When it was on the lift they did hold each tire to see if the noise changed. noise went away when thee drivers side wheel was held and got louder when the passenger side wheel was held."

So you have two possibilities. The wheel bearing or the CV axle on the drivers side. If it were the transmission the noise would be there no matter what. Do what I said. Take it to a parking lot and pay attention to the noise. Turn circles in the lot. Get up to 10 to 15 MPH and listen. Doing a left turn will put pressure on the drivers side tire. If it is a bearing the noise will diminish or go away making a right hand circle. If the noise stays constant both ways, it is the CV axle. An axle and bearing will have the sane noise up to a certain point. When they get real bad, the bearing will continue the grinding, just worse. The axle will start making a clunking noise.

I did the circle thing. The grinding noise didn't change. The clunking noise started today. What should I look for under the car to verify it being the CV?

  • Randy Ohler May 19, 2015

Excessive play in the axles. Lift the front and grab the center. They will move a bit new in and out. But not up and down. Also broken boots and slinging grease are good indicators.

That would be"center of the axle"

Changed. Front driver wheel bearing 2008jeep compass front wheel drive now it won't drive grinds an whines especially when putting it in park

It sounds like there might be an issue with the installation of the new wheel bearing, or a related component. Grinding and whining noises are often signs of mechanical issues in the drivetrain, and if the problem only started after the wheel bearing replacement, it's likely related to that.
I would recommend having the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. They should be able to diagnose the issue and determine whether the problem is with the new wheel bearing, or another component in the drivetrain.
In the meantime, I would avoid driving the vehicle as much as possible, especially if the grinding and whining noises persist. Continued driving could cause further damage and make the repair more expensive.

2004 jeep grand charokee grinding noise when

ok, think about mass that moves under the forces of braking, things like engines and gearboxes, have you checked all those mounts for integrity, have a look to see if anything has been rubbing, new shiney spots appearing that weren't there before.

What is the reason for front grinding when turning

This due to either a worn wheel bearing or a worn front drive arm.

The most common cause of a grinding noise when turning is a worn front wheel bearing. What happens is that the weight of the car is shifted on to that wheel as you make the turn causing the worn bearing to make a grinding noise.

Grinding metal sound over 30 mph

I believe that your Subaru has a transmission issue. There are quite a few things that will make a grinding noise. Wheel bearings, worn out brakes, damaged brake rotors or drums, loose or damaged brake calipers, defective hardware kit (for the brake shoes), torque converter, flywheel, U-joints, and CV joints. The interesting part of your symptoms is that you can only hear the grinding between 30-60MPH. I think you need to continue testing and inspecting components, one by one. You have all ready narrowed your search down. You know that the Brakes, CV joints, and Bearings are fine. So now you need to focus on the drive train. Inspect as much as you can from the flywheel, to the transmission, the drive shaft and rear axel, and the output shaft and front drive axel. If you can not find it yourself it may be time to send it in for repair. Let me know if you have any questions or new information, good luck.

1996 grand cherokee has a grinding noise in the front end like a wheel bearing .It gets so bad that it will hardly move.

First remove the wheel that has the grinding noise and rotate the wheel to hear the noise. If it is a muffled grinding noise it will be the bearing. If external it will be a fully worn brake pad

Grinding front passenger wheel when turning right

grinding on front wheel is caused by 2 things. a bad or loose wheel bearing,or worn out brakes, have them both checked You might also want to check the level of fluid in the power steering reservoir - low or lack of fluid will also cause a noise (although more of a whining than a grinding).
This can also be caused by worn or damaged central velocity joints if the vehicle is front wheel or four wheel drive.

I have front end vibration that is not caused by alignment. New tires on all four wheels but still have alot of front end vibration. Car is a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon.

just checked this out a while ago:

Wheel Hub Assemblies: Systems and Diagnosis of Worn Hub Assemblies & Bearings
Front wheel hub assemblies and bearings control the position of, and reduce the resistance of, vehicle wheels in contact with the pavement. When they fail, front wheels may not be kept in position and vibration and noise usually develop. Symptoms that normally develop as a result of these worn parts include:
  • A humming, rumbling or growling noise which increases with acceleration or as the vehicles turns
  • Vibration felt in the steering wheel, which changes with vehicle speed or as the vehicle turns
  • Looseness or excessive play in the steering wheel (especially while driving over rough road surfaces)
  • A loud, constant grinding noise when driving the vehicle (heard in the most severe cases of a wheel bearing failure)
  • Pulling to one side when braking.
  • Roughness - with the vehicle of the ground, roughness or vibration when rotating the wheel
  • Looseness - with the vehicle off the ground, looseness when wiggling the wheel back and forth (Looseness may also indicate a worn ball joint)
  • Excessive brake pedal play can also indicate sloppy or excessively loose wheel bearings
  • ABS failure in the system may be related to failure of the ABS sensor in the hub assembly or the internal sensor in the wheel bearing
